Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Michael Camp. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Michael, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
I came from a family that had to work for everything they currently have. They started from the bottom and made a great life for themselves. I saw it with my own eyes as I was growing up. When I started to come into my own as a young adult I realized how much they sacrificed to put me in a position to chase my dreams and have a better life than they did at my age. Hard work is a consistent in their life and that has transitioned into me. Without them I wouldn’t have the work ethic or drive to keep chasing the entertainment business. Plus, I’m a little stubborn and can’t take no for answer. So I keep knocking on the door. Eventually it will either open or I’ll kick it in.
Michael, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I’m a Screen Actors Guild Actor, writer and director. I broke into the industry in 2011. Always wanted to be apart of the business and a Director from Hollywood moved in across the street from me. Gave me my first opportunity and been chasing it ever since. Been apart of some great projects such as Hawaii Five – 0, Magnum P.I. and most recently I will be apart of the upcoming Beverly Hills Cop: Alex Foley starring Eddie Murphy. It’s an extremely hard business but with the right mindset and work ethic you can make your slow climb to the top. Most important advice with the entertainment industry is don’t quit. It’s a life choice. Think of it as a marathon, not a sprint. That goes for anything that is hard to attain in this world though.
Have you ever had to pivot?
I would say the biggest pivot for me in the acting business was getting my first network TV credit and becoming a SAG member. It’s a whole different thing when you get to the big leagues and camera is on you in front of 150 to 200 crew members. Starting in independent and short films is great building blocks but you step on a large scale production is something else. You either thrive or fold. The choice will be yours.
Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutely, I want to work with all my heroes and continue working on the biggest productions out there. If you continue to do that you’re slowly making your way to the top of the food chain of Hollywood. Being apart of great stories is what it’s all about.
