We recently connected with Darwin Boston and have shared our conversation below.
Darwin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Can you tell us a story about a time you failed?
Yeah, so actually the first time I went to perform an original song it was for some college media organization on Ohio University’s campus called Friday’s Live, which was meant to give students experience in producing a tv show. Anyway, I pulled up, and during the performance I got lost in where I was halfway through the song. I blanked on the lyrics with like thirty people watching and five giant cameras in my face. After I messed up, I just kinda walked off didn’t talk to anyone and went home to re-think this whole music thing. I just remember thinking never again do I want to feel like that so I’m going to go twice as hard to make sure I don’t.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My actual name is Michael Boston. I started out making music way back in 7th grade ignoring teachers to write songs on hall passes, only to go home and record them directly to SoundCloud from my Iphone 4 while standing in my bathtub to make it “sound better”. I have always been interested in art whether it be drawing, editing pictures, or making music but it wasn’t until I got to college that I really decided I wanted to pursue a career in music. Not long after that decision I met my now manager Matt who has really helped me a ton with the industry side of things. Fast forward to today, I have graduated college with a degree in music production, went on two tours of Ohio, generated over 100,000 streams across all platforms, and have been able to help the local community with events such as toy drives.
After graduating I moved to Columbus, Ohio where I met up with my producer Alec “ProdAG ” who has more recently has been making all of the beats I use. He then introduced me to my engineer Jon Garcia. I really couldn’t do this without them and other honorable mentions like producer Gino Bambino and Sam Rothestein who have helped me develop my sound both live and in your headphones along the way.
I’m just proud to say that the vision has expanded beyond me alone in my bathtub to now having a whole team behind me to bring this to life. Knowing that nothing has come easy so far I know we still have a lot of work to do, but I look forward to the days we can tour the country and give back to the supporters.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think the attention I put into writing my lyrics has really helped me. I always write music with the intention of saying something even if that may not be what everyone wants to hear.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
For me, the most rewarding part of it is having people that you have never met come up to you after a show and tell you they loved a song. I have met people who discovered my music from a show and at another show come up to me and say that my music has really helped them through something. That is probably my favorite thing because music is like my therapy so being able to give people an outlet through my own outlet is pretty cool.
