Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Michael Autore. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Michael thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Can you open up about a risk you’ve taken – what it was like taking that risk, why you took the risk and how it turned out?
In 2018, I went through the 3 hardest things someone can go through (and all at once). I was navigating through a break up, quit my job, and moved to a new city all within a 3 week span. I needed to get out of my environment, and change all the scenery. I walked away from job security, broke my lease, and moved to New York City without much of a plan. It was the scariest thing that I have ever put myself through. I am now nearly 7 years removed, have a great job, a wife, a dog, and started my own business. To this day, I continue to take risks and always bet on myself because I was able to navigate through my hardships in 2018.

As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I have been a personal trainer for 13 years now, and have had pretty much every type of job within fitness (trainer, class instructor, training manager, assistant gm, sales advisor, etc.) I have always enjoyed working with people in the gym, and seeing that success translate into other areas of a given individuals life. In 2021, I was inspired to start my own business, SlimThick NYC which the goal of helping people feel more comfortable in their bodies. I started SlimThick because I wanted to share the resources I have had access to throughout my life, and I want to inspire people to be more confident. At SlimThick, we help people gain confidence through Strength Training, Personal Development, and Open Discussions about Mental Health. Aside from in-person and remote coaching (via zoom), SlimThick also holds community events (parties and retreats), sells Apparel and Merchandise, and gives back via sponsorships and fundraisers.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
I already commented on this is a previous drop down, but in 2018 I did the following things:
– ended a relationship
– broke my apartment lease
– walked away from job/money
– moved to New York City
I did all of that within a 3 week span which was very challenging but I needed to change my environment to protect my mental health. I am now 7 years removed, and in the best headspace I have ever been in.

Other than training/knowledge, what do you think is most helpful for succeeding in your field?
People Skills or Strong Communication Skills are necessary to be a successful coach with a long career. If I were hiring someone then I would take a good personality and people skills over experience or education. To be an effective coach, you must be empathetic, a good listener, and very in tune with your own thoughts and emotions. Another way to say all of this is that a coach must have high Emotional Intelligence.
