Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Michael A. Phoenix. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Alright, Michael A. thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I’ve always had an unwavering love for movies. As a child, I spent countless hours writing stories inspired by films and books that had consumed me. I vividly remember mimicking my favorite actors’ movements and reciting their dialogues—movies were my world.
My first taste of the spotlight came at the age of five when I played Romeo in an after-school production of ‘Romeo and Juliet.’ It was a defining moment that sparked my love for performance. Although I took a break from acting as time passed, my fascination with movies never waned. I’d sneak out to theaters, immersing myself in stories unfolding on the big screen.
My passion led me to a job at a movie theater, reigniting my love affair with film. Then came a turning point when I landed an internship at Quest Media in Staten Island, working on the television show ‘Profiles with Mickey Burns.’ Meeting celebrities like Jesse Ventura and Marc Cohn was thrilling, but what truly captivated me was learning the ropes of production—cameras, lighting, sound, and editing. I craved knowledge and soaked up everything I could.
Determined to pursue acting, I began auditioning with nothing but a monologue recorded in my mother’s living room. Despite having no formal training, I secured lead roles in student films and internet projects, marking the beginning of my acting journey, albeit with humble earnings. I was fortunate to have the support of my mother and stepfather, who covered my travel expenses until I could reimburse them.
Gradually, my career gained momentum. I ventured into making movies, featured in commercials, and secured roles in television shows. It’s been a journey of relentless passion, continuous learning, and the unwavering support of loved ones that has propelled me to where I am today.
Michael A., love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I come from the Bronx, New York, born to an African American mother and a Puerto Rican father. My path has been a challenging one, navigating through group homes, foster care, children’s shelters, and even homeless shelters. It’s taught me that life’s journey varies for each of us.
Every day, I wake up grateful for a roof over my head, food on the table, and the unwavering love of my family. My art is more than a passion—it’s an extension of my being. ‘Fleeting Nirvana,’ my directorial debut film, was deeply inspired by the loss of my aunt to suicide. I poured the emotions of confusion, mystery, grief, and shock into its screenplay. Being selected by an Oscar-qualifying film festival was a testament to the raw honesty within it.
Despite stumbling and encountering mistakes along the way, I take immense pride in my accomplishments. My drive is fueled by the opportunities that lie ahead, propelling me toward a future where I aim to create even more impactful and extraordinary work.
Are there any books, videos or other content that you feel have meaningfully impacted your thinking?
I have a few favorite books that have left a lasting impact on me: ‘The Alchemist’ by Paulo Coelho, ‘Think and Grow Rich’ by Napoleon Hill, and ‘The Secret’ by Rhonda Byrne.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
I am committed to discovering my true potential and evolving, both personally and artistically. For me, it’s not just about pursuing fame and wealth; I am looking for creative fulfillment. My goal is to inspire and uplift others while I progress on this journey. I am genuinely excited to see where my skills will take me and to keep growing on this incredible path!
