We recently connected with Micco Nami and have shared our conversation below.
Micco , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Creating cohesive bodies of work is one of my primary focuses. In creating meaningful and timeless albums I found that one of the most important things to do is to allow life to happen. If you want to create something that feels like a complete story, you must allow a cycle of time to pass in order to receive inspiration organically. Life happens on its own time. The sonic textures and moods that I focus on with each project come at different times. Although I may be working on a project with a specific tone, the tone of life will not always reflect that color. So being patient and looking for the perfect times when things align gives me the ability to create one body of work over a course of years that will still feel connected.

Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I work with music in about all of its processes, but I am primarily and songwriter. I explored a few art mediums throughout my life. However; some time at the end of high school, or beginning of college, I tried to make music and quickly found that this canvas was a perfect fit for my ideas and expression. With songwriting, I put a special effort into reflecting on peculiar ideas, or basic life concepts, but in peculiar ways. One thing I found myself doing with music, even before creating it, was using it for therapeutic means. Using sound to set a peaceful environment and process thoughts, and or emotions is something that I translated into my own creating process. I work with the hopes that this service would also be provided to my listeners. I take a lot of pride in making art that is universal as far as it being able to be digested by a large variety of people.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
One thing that I believe is overlooked about being an artist is that the more you learn about your creative process, the better you become at other areas of life, and vice versa. Everything is connected. Lessons you learn through your creative journey about patience, faith, and staying true to yourself can evolve you in extreme ways. A dedicated creative learns how to pursue dreams and let go of things that don’t fit your mold. This is important in so many other areas of life. Just as becoming better at life enhances your creative experience.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Throughout a four year creative process of my first album “Omni Odyssey”, I had a lot of different struggles. It took me a while to take all of my inspirations and cycle through them long enough to find a style that felt original. Throughout the process of this album I had to find myself vocally, not being professionally trained and having to teach myself vocal techniques. I also had a hard time figuring out how to place my voice on songs because of my unique tone. I also had no instrumental training and little knowledge of music theory. With all of that being said I had to find ways to grow, while also expressing my ideas through the place that I was currently at in my skill level. In addition to the struggles, I haven’t really aligned with any other artists for different reasons, so songwriting, producing, engineering and even photos and editing for cover art has being completely in my hands so far. I’m grateful for this because of the skills I have built over time. Also, both my computer and external hard drive crashed on the same day about half way through the process, and I lost a lot of demos and had to live with rough versions of about five songs on the album. Many times I struggled with my confidence and drive to continue with music, especially through tough times financially. All in all I can say that I am extremely proud of myself for completing a project that is eternal and still pushing through.
