We were lucky to catch up with Micah Whitfield recently and have shared our conversation below.
Micah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
My whole life was spent preparing to be a teacher – not my idea (but I loved the thought of summers off). I did that for about 12 years before getting married and expecting my first baby. Then I was stuck at the thought of leaving my baby (especially in the wake of Covid) coupled with some pretty terrible postpartum depression. Baking was always a hobby, so I picked up a part time corporate job (that was also pretty soul sucking) while I baked and spent time with my baby. I brought cookies to the office and became obsessed with icing consistency and watching cookie decorating videos on Instagram. I made birthday party cookie favors for my daughter and then people started asking where they could order them! After my son was born (two years later) I went full time with this little hobby and turned my whole basement into a licensed and inspected kitchen! I baked my way out of postpartum depression (it was my secondary therapy), won awards for my recipe, and have met SO many community members and business owners who are my biggest cheerleaders. I’ve donated cookies and funds to charities, baked for really important causes, have a little following on Instagram (mainly local), and it all means the world to me. Plus, my kids love my job almost as much as me!

Micah, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
At Micah Made Cookies, everything starts with a love for creativity and connection. I’ve always been drawn to the idea of making something beautiful that also brings joy to people, and decorated cookies became the perfect canvas for that. What began as a hobby—baking for family, friends, and special occasions—quickly grew into a passion and then into a business. Over time, I realized that cookies could be more than just a sweet treat; they could be little works of art that celebrate life’s biggest (and smallest) moments.
I specialize in custom decorated sugar cookies for events such as weddings, birthdays, baby showers, corporate gatherings, and holidays. Every cookie is hand-decorated with care, designed to reflect my client’s personality, theme, or brand. Beyond custom orders, I also host cookie decorating classes where beginners and cookie enthusiasts alike can learn new techniques, laugh together, and leave with both decorated cookies and the confidence to create at home. These classes are some of my favorite ways to share my craft—it’s not just about decorating cookies, it’s about building experiences, memories, and a sense of community.
What sets Micah Made Cookies apart is the attention to detail and personalization. I don’t just make cookies; I design them with purpose, whether that’s making a corporate logo cookie that helps a business stand out, creating a set that perfectly ties into a child’s birthday theme, or teaching someone who’s never picked up an icing bag before that they can make something beautiful. My goal is always to combine artistry with warmth—cookies that look stunning but also taste just as good. They MUST be worth the calories!
I’m most proud of the way Micah Made Cookies has become more than just a bakery—it’s become a way to connect with people, to be part of their milestones, and to give them something that feels truly special. Potential clients and followers should know that when you choose Micah Made Cookies, you’re not just ordering dessert—you’re inviting me to be part of your story. And whether it’s through custom designs, group classes, or seasonal pop-ups, my hope is always the same: to create joy, one cookie at a time.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the biggest pivots in my life came when I decided to step away from teaching. As my family grew, I realized that I was missing too much of the time I wanted to spend with my kids. Teaching is incredibly rewarding, but it also demands so much energy, planning, and time outside of the classroom. I wanted a career that would still let me be creative and make an impact, but also give me the flexibility to be present for my family.
That’s where cookies came in. What started as a creative outlet quickly became something more. I found joy not just in the decorating itself, but in the way cookies could bring people together, mark special occasions, and spread happiness. Pivoting from teaching to building Micah Made Cookies gave me the chance to use my teaching skills in new ways—like hosting cookie decorating classes where I get to guide, encourage, and celebrate others as they learn something new.
It wasn’t an easy decision to make such a big change, but it turned out to be the right one. This pivot allowed me to build a business that feels authentic to who I am, gives me the balance I was looking for, and lets me be part of so many special moments for others while still being there for my own family’s moments, too.

Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
I’d like to say that social media has been the most helpful, but most of my clients actually come to me through Google searches and word of mouth. I’ve worked for a long time to build up my Google reviews and establish good SEO, so that’s been priceless!
