We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Micah Turnbough a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Micah, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
Our family has discussed various business ideas in the past, but we never felt like we knew exactly what we wanted to do. After discussing and going over ideas, we knew ice cream was the best choice! We all loved it and felt we knew what it would take to be great. There are a lot of soft serve and custard shops in the St. Louis area, but not a lot of homemade ice cream shops. We wanted to create our flavors and make ice cream just as we like.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
We are a small family-owned and operated ice cream shop specializing in creating our flavors in small batches. Our family has a very long history of music and singing, so we thought it would be great to be called Singers Ice Cream. Singing is an essential aspect of our lives and always has been. We have also added the opportunity for customers to sing karaoke at the shop. This has been such a great way to see the community grow together and support one another. Whether it is a child singing for the first time in public or someone who has been singing their whole life, their participation inspires those around them.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I always say that if you read our Google reviews, you will know all there is to know about us and how we think you should run a business. We try to invite our guests into our world and allow them to be part of the family. Gaining relationships with our regulars is the most satisfying part of owning a business. I also think the dedication to quality ingredients and a hand-crafted product continues to bring people back and attract new guests each day.
Can you talk to us about manufacturing? How’d you figure it all out? We’d love to hear the story.
One of the things I love about our business is how little we knew about it before starting. None of us has been in the restaurant industry at any point in our lives, but we have always had a general love and appreciation for good food, especially ice cream. We didn’t want to be another shop that just purchased its ice cream from someone else. We were going to decide how each flavor would taste personally, and through trial and error, we have done so.
