We were lucky to catch up with Micah & Steven recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Micah & Steven, thanks for joining us today. Are you happier as a creative? Do you sometimes think about what it would be like to just have a regular job? Can you talk to us about how you think through these emotions?
We played this indie-rock fest during our first year as a band, before we had released the ‘Sunday Sessions’ EP, and after our set, this kid met us at the side stage to tell us how the first song was his favorite! It didn’t even matter what the song was. This genuine gesture and connection in that moment, with another human, through our art – that’s happiness. Besides, we get to make our own schedule and tap into the things that inspire us. Sure, there are harder, not-so-fulfilling components that come into play when your art becomes your career but both Steven and I have held “regular” jobs and found ourselves incompatible with those environments. Neither of us would trade our pursuit for a job.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
Although falllift formed in 2021, both Steven and I have been involved in music since childhood. My father was a singer-songwriter and musician so, naturally, he was my earliest and most impactful influence. I was singing before I was speaking and always creating something off to the side. Now imagine little Steven, inspired by the older kids around him who are picking up instruments, and he’s sitting behind his first drum kit — a few buckets, boxes, and tin lids serving as the cymbals. Over the years, those sparks of interest have grown into two full-time, touring, successful musicians. Steven even has a custom Tidal Drumworks kit these days! We both sing, play multiple instruments (sometimes all at once), and write and perform original music.
While we are available for session work and writing, we mostly spend our time bringing art to life and sharing it with our audience. Writing, recording, releasing, performing. I think everyone has their own sound and feeling and ours is unique in its balance. We each have complimentary strengths we bring to the table and those strengths showcase themselves throughout our writing, arrangements, and harmonies. Although we float amongst several genres, the over arching theme is folk/americana and we’ve deemed the music we’re writing now (and releasing soon) as “cosmicana”.
It’s hard to say there’s one thing that we’re most proud of but choosing this life and showing up for our passions falls pretty high on the list. Music and art are these undeniable forces that are capable of communicating, if only someone is present and willing to listen. It is beautiful and mysterious and that is exactly the magic we want people to experience.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
The best way to support any ecosystem is to get involved in it. You might be thinking, well, I’m not a creative and I don’t intend to be. Perfect, because an ecosystem takes all kinds. We need audiences to attend shows, because each person that shows up adds to our resumé when meeting with talent buyers and other industry professionals when they ask to see how many tickets we sold in each city. We need ally’s that are willing to advocate for the arts and funding at local, state, regional, and national levels. Other creative professionals to collaborate with and build communities to support each other. Direct funding (hiring, grants, tips, purchases, etc).
Really, the biggest thing society can do is learn to appreciate art again. Not just as entertainment and marketing but as the form of expression it was always intended to be.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
Freedom. Hands down, freedom is the most rewarding aspect of being an artist.
