Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Micah Larsen. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Micah, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
My first business failed. As I studied social influence in graduate school I kept seeing how research on changing people’s minds could apply to small businesses. I created an algorithm — starting on paper at my dining room table — that predicted the best way to persuade someone to say “yes” to a request. It took all the social science I read about and made it into a tool business owners could use. It worked, and it was really powerful, but I couldn’t get people to pay to work with me. Clients were few and far between, and it felt like all I did was chase my next sale. It took years for me to learn that I wasn’t being a good listener. I had to stop trying to figure out what to SAY to potential clients and start listening to the words they used to describe their needs. When I was unexpectedly hospitalized leading up to my son’s birth, I spent a month on bed rest in a labor and delivery unit where I had a lot of time to think about what it meant to be a woman business owner and working mom. I started to focus in on what women business owners really wanted and needed from their marketing, and my business kicked into gear after that.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I teach women business owners and creatives exactly what to say in their content and copy to attract their ideal clients. I grew up in a community of talented artists who struggled to feel confident in the marketing and sales ends of their businesses, so I love working with people who are passionate about their craft but don’t know how to start promoting their work. I lead virtual group programs and work 1:1 with clients on Zoom. I’m most proud of the stack of thank-you cards from my clients all over the US and the UK; owning a business is not easy, but those cards remind me why I do what I do. Helping women make a stable income so they have intellectual and financial freedom really fills my soul.
How do you keep in touch with clients and foster brand loyalty?
I write weekly emails to my list with actionable tips they can use right away to see measurable differences in their businesses. It’s important to me to write scheduled emails that they actually want to read! At the end of many of those emails are invitations to monthly free virtual trainings for women business owners, where I cover a specific marketing topic. My goal is that everyone leaves with an action plan and feeling like they have more control over their marketing. Those trainings lead to a lot of paying clients.
We’d love to hear the story of how you built up your social media audience?
I find that the content that CONSISTENTLY performs best with my audience is when I put words to the feelings they have about themselves and their businesses. It nailed down 6 content pillars — buckets or categories of topics — that are relevant to me, personally and professionally, and to my ideal clients. Having these “buckets” of ideas helps me consistently show up with messages that really resonate. “Viral” content grew my audience over time.
