We recently connected with Micah Christensen and have shared our conversation below.
Micah, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
Ive always wanted to tell a story with my music. So when I started miicah, I wanted to tell a story that will help 1. me understand myself better and learn new lessons and 2. help others see the most universal struggles from a different perspective to find a way out. The most universal struggle that I feel we all deal with is loneliness. It can get pretty clouded in our heads when we are struggling to find purpose and joy. For me twenty one pilots was that. They told stories in ways where I related and found ways to combat my struggles in healthy ways. They taught me a lot of tricks to use against my daily battles that overall improved my life. And I believe that telling stories in forms of parables is the most effective way to have an impact on the world. I consider myself to be an artist before a musician. So my most meaningful project has to be “miicah”. First album: bad holiday, is about a lifestyle change that is out of our control. The most lonely time of my life was when I had a dramatic life change. So with that feeling, I found a subtle comfort in the pain and loneliness. Thus “the liminal space” had a heavy inspiration in the sound and direction of storytelling in this album. Next album which is my upcoming release in August is titled “fatamorgana”. Here we talk a lot about time. Time is the next big thing that we all suffer from in a sense. This album dives deeper into the story now introducing time into the picture. bad holiday was the liminal space and fatamorgana is the addition of time to this space of change. I have started my 3rd album where I am for sure going to be diving way further into the lore side of the music. It is going to be packed with easter eggs and connections to the past 2 albums. I cant wait till I reach album 5 or 6 telling this story. I have more to dive into but I am writing a book about this so that I dont have to explain it all the time hahaha.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have been doing music for as long as I can remember. I write all my own music as far as production, recording, mixing, and mastering. Ive made music from pretty much all genres except country and branch off genres. I just kept making music till I started getting noticed. I just love making music. I havent really had much of an option, Music lives inside of me so its not even a question about my discipline to create. It feels extremely natural to me for what others call a simple practice. It feels like Its just apart of who I am. Ive loved working on logic pro x the most. Universal Audio is my go to for plug ins and equipment. My favorite instrument is bass. I think what truly sets me apart from others is my unique sound and my consistency to create and release on a monthly basis. People have appreciated me more just because of my consistency. I think thats kinda cool to be honest. I would rather be noticed for my hard work than for just writing a good song.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I want to make music for as long as I can. All I want is to make a difference in the world and I believe that the story and message I want to tell is important enough for the whole world to hear and be apart of. Tyler Joseph of twenty one pilots once said during a concert “dont put a ceiling on your dreams” and I took that and kept it in a safe spot in my heart. I knew I could do what ever I wanted that night. I made the decision right there that I would make music and bring a change to the world. I quickly realized, the people who laughed at me for being so bold in that belief, were truly laughing at themselves cause they either gave up on their dreams or never tried to begin with.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The feeling I get when I get messages from fans about things they struggle with and how my music has helped them truly is something like Ive never felt before. I love it. I love connecting with people. I love sharing my light with others. I love helping lift people. I know how it feels to just be in the gutter and feel alone, lost, and in a confusing frustration and I never want anyone to feel completely hopeless. Because there is always, always hope. So that is a truly amazing thing to experience and its what keeps me going and gives me momentum.
