We were lucky to catch up with Micaela and Josh recently and have shared our conversation below.
Micaela and Josh, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. What’s the backstory behind how you came up with the idea for your business?
When a California boy met a Carolina girl and they went on a coffee date, not only did they end up falling in love with each other but with the whole coffee shop experience. As their lives were anything but stationary in a long distance relationship, the search for amazing beverages became one common thread that followed them were ever they went. From local coffee shops to unique bar experiences Josh and Micaela developed a passion for incorporating mindful beverages into meaningful days spent together. Their passion quickly turned into a desire to share their love of craft coffee, quality mocktails, style, experiences and building of conversation around mindful drinking, while bringing community together in the most unlikely places. With multiple years in the wedding and event industry Josh and Micaela saw a need to bring the current bar service offering into the current century. Long gone are the days where coffee can be acceptably served off in a corner with very little style, quality or taste. We are entering a new era where sobriety and sober curiosity is becoming a movement with very little to offer with alternative drinks. The demand for nonalcoholic offerings doesn’t really reflect the desire of consumers who really want to focus on what they’re putting into their bodies. Juice and club fall short in presentation and taste making exploring a sober lifestyle that much harder for anyone attending a social gathering these days. The solution was obvious however….Josh and Micaela were determined to build and achieve a dream they had; to start a mobil beverage bar service. A bar service that would match the level of an event. Drinks that would elevate a sober experience and coffee that didn’t look or taste like it came as a second thought. The name Day Drinker is a play off the original phrase’s meaning but with a twist… It was chosen as a reflection of our daily drinks of choice, a passion and maybe a little bit of an addiction too. Beverages many enjoy and plan their day around. While the world is questioning and rethinking what they drink and how they drink, Josh and Micaela are stepping up and providing answers and an alternative to a more modern way of consuming beverages.
Micaela and Josh, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
We are Josh and Micaela. A couple in love with each other, life and quality beverages that lack nothing in taste, presentation, and forward thinking. After a passion met a purpose, a dream met hard work and sacrifices, Day Drinker came to be. Over 12 years in the event industry and three years in the beverage industry we saw a shift in the way beverages were being made, presented, consumed. We saw and experienced a lack of what was being offered in the beverage industry and decided to be part of the change…part of the movement…and part of a new era of the way we consume and experience social drinking. Day Drinker offers mobil bar services including coffee, mocktails and infusions. We are proud to help guide the conversation around mindful drinking, while bringing community together no matter where you are at. We value our opportunity to illuminate options many consumers of beverages don’t even know that they have. We believe any drink can be done in style. Fresh taste, hand-squeezed or freshly pressed juice, house infused syrups and recipes inspired by the seasons are our standard. We take care of all the logistics from bar rentals, glassware, bar menus, ice, etc. so you can enjoy every sip start to finish.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
For may, the initial capital needed to start a business is the first excuse to not ever pursue a business venture in the first place. We definitely battled that line of thinking. We found that the start up cost for a mobil bar service was more then we could manage at the time without going into debt. We didn’t want to limit our dreams and visions from lack of resources though. We spent many nights researching equipment to get us started on Facebook market place. We got creative and started watching YouTube videos on how to build our cart ourselves to also save money. We were not afraid to get our hands dirty and appreciated learning along the way how every piece of our cart and repairs to equipment came together. We have sacrificed on both time and money but it is well worth the peace of mind knowing that we are not in debit or too behind on our goals and timelines.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
Research and experience. Though we were in the event industry already and had a passion for beverages, we still wanted to establish credibility in the beverage industry as much as we could. Books have there place but its hard to beat hands on experience. Micaela applied to work at a local coffee shop as well as a local bar where she could gain experience serving beverages of all kinds. She was hired for each positions and quickly made her way to management. The connections established and the experience gained was priceless. It not only launched our business faster but further than we ever could on our own.
