We recently connected with Mica Mackenzie and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mica thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What do you think matters most in terms of achieving success?
I think it takes guts. It takes extremely hard work, dedication, intuitiveness, and having the right connections.
When I was 19 years old, I moved home from Europe and worked 40+ hours per week as a nanny to pay the bills and then worked on building Quiet Nonsense on the side for at least 30+ hours per week. It was back-breaking and, looking back, it definitely wasn’t healthy. BUT- did it get me to where I wanted to be? Yes, it did. And for that, I am eternally grateful to my old self for hanging in there and dealing with being exhausted, anxiety-ridden, broke, and beyond stressed for so long. I can now say that it was so worth it!
Mica, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
My name is Mica Mackenzie and I grew up in Laverne, Oklahoma- a small town with a population under 1,700 people. During my time there I took up many creative habits such as singing, playing the piano, and dancing. When I was 15 years old I moved to Dallas where I pursued online school through a private program at Texas Tech. I used my free time to pursue a career as a performer, write music, travel, and immerse myself as much in the arts as possible. By the time I turned 18 I realized that my passions lay elsewhere- writing. When I was 19 I moved to the Netherlands where I lived for a few months and spent time writing a few books and experiencing Dutch culture. Upon coming home I decided to start up a blog called Quiet Nonsense and really commit myself to it. I’d decided this was going to be my mark on the world and the way I wanted to earn my living. Over the next few years I worked as a nanny and simultaneously worked on building Quiet Nonsense until I landed a job working as an assistant for one of the winner’s of The Bachelor and was able to finally able to work full time from home. This is when QN really started to take off and thrive. This is also Jan. 1 2020, meaning the pandemic was already on the horizon but many of us didn’t know it yet. COVID actually helped my business in many ways because as businesses closed they were forced to go online and drive e-commerce sales to stay in business. With QN offering services such as web design, social media management, content creation, email marketing, virtual assistance, SEO and more- we were in the perfect position to help meet this need. We’ve been steadily growing since then and have garnered clients such as Banter by Piercing Pagoda- a Zales-owned jewelry brand, Dallas Artists, health and wellness brands, influencers, doctors and food brands that are sold at Central Market and featured on Food Network. Myself and my team currently offer social media management, content creation, email marketing, Tik-Tok Reels/creation, branding, web design, graphic design, content writing and virtual assistance services.
How’d you build such a strong reputation within your market?
I think it was a combination of factors- my connections, the quality of service (leading to lots of referrals), and the media attention I worked hard to get for Quiet Nonsense during our launching period. We were featured in a few online magazines, such as this one, as well as podcasts.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
It would definitely have to be the freedom I get in my daily life. I make my own schedule. I choose my own clients. And every single day when I wake up for work I am excited because I believe in the brands I work for and represent. I also have the freedom to have my son at home with me and be more involved in his life than if I had to go into an office every day. Being creative has always been something I’ve loved- getting to do it for a living was the best-case scenario.
