We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mica Boet a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mica, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. The first dollar your business earns is always special and we’d love to hear how your brand made its first dollar of revenue.
My very first client, that wasn’t a friend, was a mentorship opportunity!
The pay was low, however, the opportunity to learn from the best and gain valuable experience was totally worth it.
My mentor took the role of business coach, motivator, trainer, educator, and gave me valuable opportunities to develop my skills through client projects with big brand names in the craft niche. For example, if you are a crafter I am 98% sure you’ve bought their products in big name craft stores.
In this mentorship I learned how to create a marketing strategy, create content, review analytics, and manage social media accounts.
When I think back to that time I realize SO much has changed in the past 6 years! 😂 It’s wild how social media has evolved and it’s more powerful now than ever.
The coolest part of it all…
I was working full time as a creative director and by the end of my mentorship I had taken the dive to quit my 9-5 and freelance full time. In fact, I had become so busy with new clients who were referred to me that it was time for me to part ways with my mentor for higher paying opportunities.
Throughout my journey of starting my business I have had many opportunities I would consider ‘mentorships’ where I have been able to work and learn from the best in marketing and this has been key to my growth.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
My current favorite service to offer is product photography. It provides me with a great platform to transform creative ideas into stunning visuals, and effectively showcase products in their best light.
I initially specialized in Graphic Design, but everything changed when I met my amazing friend through Roller Derby. She mentored me as I began offering marketing services in addition to graphic design, and that’s when my freelance business truly took off. However, it wasn’t until I met my first mentor that I experienced significant growth. Networking and mentorships have played a pivotal role in my success thus far!

Any stories or insights that might help us understand how you’ve built such a strong reputation?
90% of my business revenue has come from referrals by existing clients. A referral is the greatest compliment someone can give.
When I started my business my first goal was to match my 9-5 income and set aside 3 months of savings. Once I realized I was on a path to work for myself I was incredibly motivated to make it happen.
Because I had a goal I knew every client interaction was crucial. I needed to maintain professionalism and integrity. Through every experience good and bad I crafted my responses with the intention of giving the best experience to each and every client even when it didn’t feel very good.
6 years later I am self-employed, have built a marketing team and have a lot of projects under my belt that I am really proud of and I believe it is because of my decision to always move, create, and speak with integrity.
So in other words…I believe my choice to create an intentional business who’s model was built on integrity has built a very positive reputation in my niche.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
I am a single mom and single income household. It took me 6 whole years being self-employed to purchase my first home.
My story is not different from most womxn or single moms out there. We are all incredibly resilient and do what needs to be done.
The best example of my resilience is simply motherhood.
It’s taken a lot of planning, trust, fear, work, and support from my circle to be able to have a self-employed career and I have so much gratitude.
It doesn’t make me special or more resilient.
I am just so proud to be part of the womxnhood experience where we rise above and make ish happen despite our circumstances.
