We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mia Redwine a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. One of our favorite things to brainstorm about with friends who’ve built something entrepreneurial is what they would do differently if they were to start over today. Surely, there are things you’ve learned that would allow you to do it over faster, more efficiently. We’d love to hear how you would go about setting things up if you were starting over today, knowing everything that you already know.
What would I do differently if I got the chance to start over is honestly a question I ask myself a lot and unfortunately I think is a very common question for creators in this space to contemplate. For me, I have struggled a decent amount with wondering if all the choices I’ve made up until this point in my career have been the right ones and although they may not perfect, I am pretty satisfied with where they have led me. I think if I were to have the opportunity to start over I would take more advantage of the education I was given. Sometimes it’s hard to realize how special opportunities are in the moment but looking back I can see that I was given so many tools to help me on this journey and I could have learned even more. I would have asked more questions when I felt I wasn’t fully understanding, I would’ve used my amazing peers around me to help me flush out my stories a bit more, and I most Definity would’ve studied more films in general. If I were to start over, I would also start experimenting at a much younger age. There are both pros and cons with the way the internet has impacted our generation but I think something beautiful that has come out of it is the amount of knowledge at our fingertips. If starting over, I would encourage myself to possibly study what those before me have accomplished and learn from their failures and their success. I would truly dedicate time to my passion and push myself a little more to show up for myself. When I was first starting on this journey I was very fearful of rejection and being judged. Although that is a natural feeling, I wish I would’ve embraced it a bit more instead of running away from it.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hi everyone, I’m Mia! I’m currently working at TMZ on the digital video team in the social department. I was born in beautiful San Diego, CA, and I grew up in a city just outside of there called Temecula—so very much a Southern California girl lol.
I moved to Los Angeles to attend college at the New York Film Academy, where I studied Filmmaking. I originally went for Directing, but I soon discovered a passion for Production Design. A year after graduating, I was accepted into the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Gold Rising Program as part of the Production Design track.
Fast forward to now—as I mentioned, I currently work in the social department at TMZ as a Digital Video Associate Producer. It’s a long title that essentially means I’m part of a team that films, produces, edits, and posts video content for our company. The process of my job varies depending on the project, but typically, my day-to-day consists of researching stories I think will perform well on specific platforms, pitching them to the rest of the team in our morning meeting, editing those videos, and then sending them to my co-workers to be posted. The rest of the day is spent cutting any additional requested videos, ranging from viral clips to heavily produced office content.
Right now, something I’m very proud of is how my team and I have been able to grow our platforms. I believe the future of news lies in social media, and the fact that we have been able to grow our followers by the millions is very special to me. On a personal level, I’m most proud of how I continue to practice my craft outside the office. Producing short-form content for myself and my friends has brought me so much joy, and I will continue to prioritize it for as long as I can.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
One of the most significant turning points in both my career and personal life occurred during my senior year of college. My entire graduating class had been preparing for years to shoot our thesis projects, scheduled to begin in April 2020. However, as we all know, the pandemic disrupted lives in unimaginable ways. For me, this meant that the numerous projects I had lined up—projects that would have formed the foundation of my reel and helped me pitch myself for future opportunities—were no longer happening.
At the time, this sudden shift completely threw me off course. I had believed these projects were essential for launching my career. However, this unexpected pause gave me the opportunity to reflect on whether Production Design was truly the right path for me. As it turned out, something else had been calling my name all along—editing.
Although I had been editing for over a decade, I had never seriously considered it as a viable career option. Having the time to step back and reassess my direction proved to be incredibly valuable. Now, I feel more secure and passionate about my career path, which has led me into the digital and social media space within the film industry—a field where I truly thrive.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
To me, there are countless rewarding aspects of being an artist or creative, but one of the most fulfilling is seeing the impact my art has on others. Every time I witness my work positively affecting someone—even in the smallest way—it feels incredibly rewarding.
When I was younger, I used to edit videos for my friends as a way to show my appreciation for them. It was a simple effort on my part—nothing too elaborate—but seeing their reactions and what those videos meant to them was an amazing feeling. More recently, I’ve loved creating recap videos when my friends and I attend red carpet events, when we throw a party, or when we go on vacations. Hearing them talk about how these videos bring a smile to their faces and help them relive those special moments truly warms my heart. Even though this is on a very small scale, It reminds me just how powerful and meaningful art can be.
