We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mia Miller a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Mia, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
My personal journey actually started with deadmau5 when I was in middle school. I heard his song Ghosts ‘n’ Stuff on Sirius XM one day on the way to a hockey game with my family and I was awestruck. I had never heard anything like it before and as soon as we got home, I was on YouTube attempting to find a song I couldn’t even begin to describe. Instead, I discovered all different kinds of subgenres of EDM; I found hardcore, hardstyle, house, and even techno over the next week of just trying to find the one song. Some time went by and I was in high school. On the way to school one day I remember my brother asking me if I wanted to listen to someone named Skrillex and of course I said yes (a lot of my music taste actually came from my brother, so in a way I have him to thank for all of this). I remember begging my brother almost every day to play Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites because I was obsessed with it; he had these two subwoofers in his trunk that just made everything hit different.
After that, I was once again on YouTube, researching and listening to anything that sounded anything similar to what I had heard because like I said earlier; I was obsessed.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Hi! I’m Mia, otherwise known as Dumpster Gremlin. I started under this project back in late 2020. I’m primarily a dubstep DJ about to embark on my journey as a producer as well. My original project, m1DNA, was started back around 2017-2018. After some life changing events happen in 2019, I decided to leave that project behind in that chapter of my life. I wouldn’t be where I am without it though, so I still show my love and appreciation for it to this day.
I used to help promote and organize events before I actually got into being a DJ, that’s where my love for the industry actually began. I love working behind the scenes and doing as much work as possible to help out those around me. My personal philosophy is that if you can do the work to help out, then do exactly that.
I love where my current project has taken me. I’ve met and befriended so many amazing creators and professionals over the last 3 years that have helped me get to where I am today and I cannot thank them all enough.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
In my opinion, I think the most rewarding thing is connecting with those who love the same thing you do. I’m creating an experience for the crowd; being able to see them reacting and enjoying what I’ve created for them is something indescribable. The best part though? Actually talking with people before my set. I love meeting new people and conversating with them before I play because then I feel more of a personal connection with them once I start playing. Giving people an incredible experience is what means the most to me.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
I want to help people. I want to create a community that’s safe and protected. My eventual goal is to have a tour where most of the proceeds are donated to a charity for LGBTQ+, suicide prevention, and/or sexual assault awareness. I’m also a huge believer in femme and femme presenting empowerment and so I want to create a community where they can also feel safe and empowered as well.
