We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Mia Glass a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Mia thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
So, in 2016, a few months after I was married, I was diagnosed with PCOS and one of the main physical symptoms was skin tags and hyperpigmentation. I began using bleaching cream on my skin and I had a friend tell me how dangerous that could be for me down the line. So, I started researching natural ways to clear my skin which led me to finding turmeric. I stayed until the early morning hours for days straight just studying. And then, I created my 1st product. Liquid Gold Turmeric Mask. Thus, Mjay’s was born.

Mia, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
In 2017, my mom passed away after defying all the odds set before her. So, to us, it was a shock. But she was always letting me play in makeup on her face and when she passed away, I found myself doing my makeup on the day of her funeral and I felt peace for the first time since her passing. I began doing makeup on Facebook live and got booked for my friend’s bridal shower. She was my first ever client and the bookings started shortly after.
Fast forward 2 years, bookings slowed down and I was studying my own skin and started my organic skincare line. So, I was able to help people feel good in their skin with and without makeup.
Now, this year, I am celebrating 10 years of entrepreneurship, 6 years as a makeup artist and 5 years as a skincare brand owner.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
When I first started, I was working a part time job as a fashion stylist at a boutique, and I used my money from my paycheck to fund my business.

Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
In 2022, I decided to race my friend and ended up with a torn calf for about 6 months. I could not stand without crutches, and I had to pivot. I had to go to zero clients a week for an entire year and limited production. It was definitely a challenge as I was used to being up all day working. In the end, it was worth it because I am now back with full mobility due to me taking that time to recover.
