We were lucky to catch up with Mia Gibbons recently and have shared our conversation below.
Mia, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
My Current Project: Hairstylist to Educator.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
First and foremost, I want to thank VoyageLA for reaching out to do yet another interview regarding my success in the beauty industry. Our first interview dove into why I pursued cosmetology and my journey starting as a hairstylist at Ulta Beauty. Today I am here to announce two projects I am currently working on. The Salon At Ulta Beauty has a tier system. We have three roles: Stylist, Master Stylist, and Elite Stylist. Within less than a year of working with Ulta, I promoted to Master and I can proudly say I am currently on track to promote to Elite come January. To think I graduated beauty school two years ago and have worked myself to the top stylist position in that short amount of time, is absolutely insane. To me, there is nothing more empowering than showing students in beauty school that age plays no role in success. I am twenty one years old and I will proudly exemplify that. After I promote, I have another project that I really want to start diving into: Education. Since childhood, I had extreme interest in both education and cosmetics. What I did not know, is that you do not have to choose, and you can do both! Back in beauty college, I actually had a teacher who allowed me to aid a few classes for teaching exposure, and I was thrilled. That was the moment I knew I wanted to pursue leading a class. The biggest reason I came to Ulta Beauty was the education program they offered. Their vision is to grow their stylists and instill their morals and values in us. Seeing the impact that has had on me, and the passion my Ulta Beauty Educator’s have for leadership is beyond motivating. My top career goal is to become an Educator for Ulta Beauty in the near future and continue to represent my age group. I want to show others in their late teens and early twenties that there is zero threshold to the things you can accomplish even if you are young. People will doubt you no matter what you do, so might as well do the thing you want to do most. If you are not absolutely terrified, you are not growing!
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding part of being a hair artist is transforming a guest’s confidence and building relationships with them. It is so fulfilling meeting someone for the first time and being able to watch them blossom a little bit more each time they leave my chair. The confidence just grows with each appointment and it makes my heart so happy.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
My mission is to take that client experience of blooming into a confident being, and apply that to my classroom someday. I really want to encourage the stylists in my classes to be hungry to learn more & guide them to spread their wings.
