We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mia Drewniak. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mia below.
Mia, appreciate you joining us today. We’d love to hear the backstory behind a risk you’ve taken – whether big or small, walk us through what it was like and how it ultimately turned out.
Pursuing music is a rick. Pursuing any dream is a risk. But the outcome might be something truly amazing. When I started writing my songs I was so excited. I loved the feeling of having something to show the world. Something that I’ve created. I was so excited to put it out there, I would put everything, good bad – doesn’t matter.
I was always so happy to see my peers work, so I thought – there’s nothing to be worry about – more than that – it didn’t occur to me someone could say anything bad.
And then a reality check. Critics hurt. Is it me? is it the song? Is this song? Is it the lyrics? The melody?
Sometimes pretending critics doesn’t hurt or it doesn’t affect us might effect us writing songs in the future. Subconsciously.
Suddenly you finding yourself having creative block….procrastination…that’s the effect of a hidden fear.
I think it’s important to address to young people that by making a project you taking a risk. Bigger or smaller. There is no guarantee. You might get criticised. But the real question is how you deal with it.
Ignoring it, ignoring your feelings can make you feel good for a bit. But then it will come back. So what to do?
I would say talk about it, take a note, let yourself get upset for a second and move on. Don’t disregard your feelings but don’t try to prove anyone anything.
Stay true to your art – stay true to your soul.
You taking another risk. You record another song. Another, Another. One performances. Two. Radio Stations. Streams raising. Soon people will be shocked how did you get there?
Some people are asking how do I believe in myself so much ?
Honestly, when sometimes someone will tell me they listened my song and felt something….I mean you see it it their eyes…. it’s such an incredible feeling – makes me think it’s worth taking every risk.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Hey there, I am Mia Dre singer/songwriter with a famous single “Lucifer”. You might have heard it.
I post a lot online, I direct my music videos, manage my social media (instagram @mia.dre.musicinsta)
I would describe my music as dark pop mixed with soft vocals, deep base and catchy rhythm.
I play piano and guitar, but my favourite way of performing live is just me singing and dancing.
I travel a lot all the time, it gives me a lot of inspiration to write, I also use that time to see what people are into around the globe. My last performances was where? Egypt haha. It was so fun but some people told me it was too sexy… crazy right?
Recently I realesed my single called After All and the music video was recored in Miami just by my iPhone.
My music was played many times in radio like BBC and used as a background by the influencers.
My recent inspirations are INIKO, ZHU, Labrinth and FKJ.
I want to create something deep, something that makes you think, wonder, feel your deepest emotions, cure, I want it to be lasting and beautiful. That’s what I’m about.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
That’s actually a really good question. I think most of the people who aren’t artists or are not into music listen to only easy accessible “hits”.
If I like some artist I like to listen the whole album and then choose my favourite song, and usually it’s not their most popular single. Also listening to the whole album gives you a story. I often listen albums on the airplane. Anyways, you can find some real “pearls” if you dig deeper.
So, what society could do it’s just unsubscribe from commercial popular cult and start listening to some less known artists.
Do a little research, it might be so fun. My brother is very good at it.
Or maybe a friend just released a new single ? or a friend of a friend who just posted their first music video. Why not giving it a chance?
Another thing it’s how it’s easy to critique an Independent artist who doesn’t have so much resources yet to make music sound like your favourite pop artist. Every new song and new project it’s hours putted together plus a courage to actually post something. I think they deserve a bit more praise for that.
In conclusion society could give some more attention to smaller artists. You could help them by:
1. Streaming their music in the background – it can help them push the algorithm
2. Show them to your friends, repost a story, use a music as a background, Who knows maybe you can actually help them finding a new fan?
3. Say something nice and encouraging
4. Go to their first show – it means a world!
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Recently I came across the series on HBO – Idol. It’s a movie about a guy (played by The Weekend) finding extremely talented young people on the street and inviting them to live with him in the club he owns. He is creating somewhat tribe/cult where the has cruel and extreme ways to make them better. But they did sign for it, they saying ” Tedros push me like no one ever had…his ways are questionable but it works”. Later they meet a famous singer Joselyn who is joining the cult.
The movie is so deep on so many levels and it talked openly about the problem that every artist have or had – How to push yourself by yourself? Where are the limits?
Do we need external “bad teacher” to punish us so we can be the greatest? How to deal with critique?
It’s touching subject on mental health, carrer, breakdowns, love, tough love.
The problem that Jocelyn (pop singer) has is whether her music is portraying her the way she really is. or wants to be seen, Is the single to cheesy? Will people not take her seriously? What means to be a pop star nowadays?
I think it’s a must watch for aspiring musicians. It’s a hell and dream come true in one. Musically fantastic. I keep listening to the soundtrack on the loop.
