Mia, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Alright, so you had your idea and then what happened? Can you walk us through the story of how you went from just an idea to executing on the idea
The journey from having the idea for my jewelry business to its launch was an exhilarating adventure. It all began with a vision, and here’s the story of how it unfolded:
I had always been passionate about jewelry, but it was my now husband that introduced me to the custom jewelry sector. The idea was born from a deep love for craftsmanship, the desire to create jewelry that was a good mix of dainty for women and chunkier masculine pieces.
The very next day after conceiving the idea, I started researching the jewelry industry extensively and became an apprentice. I dived into hours of online research, learning about various materials, techniques, and the market landscape. This was crucial for understanding the industry and identifying opportunities.
Over the next few months, I began sketching designs, experimenting with materials, and prototyping. It was a process of trial and error, figuring out what worked and what didn’t. The challenge was in finding the balance between aesthetics, quality, and affordability.
During that year, I was on a continuous quest to learn. I enrolled in courses and workshops to refine my jewelry-making skills. Simultaneously, I was building a brand identity, which included creating a brand name, logo, and developing a business plan.
Setting up my own workshop was a significant milestone. It required sourcing tools, materials, and creating a workspace where my designs could come to life. This involved a lot of planning and investment.
One of the most critical aspects was setting up an online presence. I built a website, established social media accounts, and learned more about digital marketing. The internet was my window to the world, and I knew that a strong online presence was vital.
I also had to navigate the legalities, including registering my business and understanding tax regulations. Networking became essential. I connected with fellow jewelers, suppliers, and mentors who offered valuable advice and support. I also tapped into the fashion community I built when I was a blogger and media personality.
A year later, after rigorous planning, learning, and countless trials, I was ready to introduce King Me Custom Jewelry to the world. The launch was a culmination of my dedication and passion. It marked the beginning of an incredible journey as an entrepreneur, bringing my vision to life, one custom piece at a time.
The process from idea to execution was filled with challenges and moments of doubt, but the drive to create something meaningful and unique kept me going. The journey is ongoing, but looking back, the steps I took to get here were essential in turning my dream into a thriving business.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.

Can you talk to us about how your side-hustle turned into something more.
My journey from a side hustle to my full-time career has been a remarkable one, rooted in my passion for content and commercial production. I initially started my career in content and commercial production, a field I was deeply passionate about. While working in this sector, I made a conscious effort to acquire essential skills in both business and engaging content creation. This knowledge served as the foundation for my side hustle.
In parallel to my day job, I embarked on building a social community online, primarily centered around fashion and media. This community was my playground for experimenting with ideas, connecting with like-minded individuals, and testing the waters of entrepreneurship. Networking became an integral part of this journey, and I cannot stress enough the significance of the relationships I cultivated during that time. These connections not only provided support but also opened doors to new opportunities.
The transition from side hustle to a full-time career was a gradual process. I leveraged the skills I had acquired in content and commercial production, and I utilized the insights gained from my online community to inform my business decisions. I took the time to learn from my job, read books, and continued to engage with my online community, which often served as invaluable focus groups for my ideas.
One of the key milestones in this transition was realizing that my side hustle had evolved into something with significant potential. This realization, coupled with the support and insights from my network, gave me the confidence to take the leap and make it my full-time career. Notably, I also funded my business using the income from the job(s) I held, ensuring a smooth and secure transition.
In sum, the journey from side hustle to a successful career was marked by a passion for content and commercial production, a commitment to learning and networking, and the unwavering support of my online community. It’s a testament to the power of acquiring skills, building relationships, and taking calculated steps toward one’s goals.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
Certainly, I’d be happy to share a story that underscores my resilience throughout my journey as a Black and female jeweler, navigating an industry that has traditionally been passed down through generations of non-Black communities.
Early in my pursuit of this path, I encountered significant challenges and biases that required unwavering resilience to overcome. I faced skepticism from vendors who often found it difficult to take me seriously, as I was attempting to break into a field that had well-established norms and traditions.
Some vendors underestimated my knowledge and expertise, attempting to get the better of me in negotiations and business dealings. They assumed that as a newcomer, I might not have the experience or determination to stand my ground. It was frustrating, but I refused to be discouraged.
Even more disheartening, some individuals outright refused to do business with me solely based on my race and gender. It was a stark reminder of the systemic biases and barriers that exist within certain industries.
But rather than allowing these obstacles to deter me, I used them as fuel for my determination. I was fueled by the idea of breaking down these barriers and shattering stereotypes. I sought out vendors who were willing to give me a chance and build partnerships based on mutual respect and shared goals.
Over time, these experiences of resilience not only made me stronger but also illuminated the need for more diversity and inclusivity within the jewelry industry. They served as a driving force behind my commitment to not only succeed personally but also to open doors for others who might face similar challenges.
My journey as a Black and female jeweler has taught me that resilience is not just about withstanding adversity but also about reshaping the industry to be more inclusive and welcoming to individuals from all backgrounds. It’s a continuous effort, and I’m proud to be part of the change.
