We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mia Amey . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mia below.
Mia , appreciate you joining us today. Looking back, do you think you started your business at the right time? Do you wish you had started sooner or later
I started my podcast in April 2023. I definitely wish I would have started when I first came up with the idea to start one back in 2020. I was just scared and so many unplanned things began to happen. I knew that it was something that I really wanted to do and honestly if I would have back then, I would be further than I am now because in 2020, Covid hit and people had more time on their hands to sit and listen. That’s when a lot of podcast blew up, but things happen for a reason. I’m just glad that I finally took that leap of faith.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
My name is Mia. I’m a 33 year old black woman and I am a podcaster. I come from a very small town but I’ve always had global dreams since I was a little girl. I decided to start my podcast because I’ve always had a voice. I’ve always wanted to have a talk show or be on the radio. I chose podcasting because I felt like I had what it took to pull in listeners. All my life I’ve been a story teller. My family and friends love for me to tell stories about my life and experiences because I’m so passionate expressive. I don’t do the negative topics. I always speak on what’s important to me, things like black love, mental health, music, black entrepreneurship, being happy and self love. I don’t hold back. I’ve been through a lot. I open my heart and be as vulnerable as I possibly can with my listeners.
How did you build your audience on social media?
Podcasting consists of having an audience. I’m pretty well known in my hometown and surrounding areas so the people i know or that have heard of me has always been supportive. I’ve had a clothing line, made custom jewelry, and even rapped and I’ve had solid support from them. Any time I post, they share which has been helpful and I’m so thankful for that. I also post a lot on TikTok and create reels of 60 second clips from my episodes that I know would catch people’s attention. Social media is more than just reading celebrity gossip. It’s a place where anybody can become someone. It’s all about networking, posting and being consistent. Even though consistency is something I’m working on.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
Before starting my podcast I did a lot of research. I’m big on reading and watching documentaries so doing that was the easy part. Books like Podcast 101 and Podcast Launch were some of the books I read to get an idea of what I need to execute my plan. I’ve been a fan of a lot of different podcasts for years such as 85 South, Pour Minds, Cocktales, Black Girl Gone and Big Facts which are all different genres but all of them has been an inspiration on helping me get started.
