We recently connected with Meyoshi Smith-Andres and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Meyoshi thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. Risk taking is something we’re really interested in and we’d love to hear the story of a risk you’ve taken.
I lost my job in 2010 while pregnant with my 2nd child and almost lost my Husband due to gun violence all in the same month. I had to figure out a way to take care of my family of 4, so I took the one thing that I found solace in (baking/cooking) and decided to make it a business. I had always shared baked goods, and savory dishes with friends, family, and co workers so I knew from positive reviews that I was on to something; however, turning my passion into a business was terrifying. I struggled with whether people would support me or whether I would fail. Despite my fears, I knew I had to step out on faith. I did as many free events as I could to gain exposure. I made tons of mistakes along the way but eventually created a business acumen that has attributed to my success as a small business owner for over 14 years. I always say, I believe God will shake your foundation up to lead you to your purpose. Had I not experienced all the hardships, I don’t know whether I would have pursued my dream.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
My name is Meyoshi Smith-Andres, born and raised in Pasadena/Altadena, CA. I am Owner/ Baker for Blaque Iris. I am the wife of my middle school sweetheart and proud Mother of 3 beautiful children. I started Blaque Iris in 2010 after being laid off from my long time Career in the Pharmaceutical industry. We are a full service event planning company, specializing in baked goods, catering, and event planning/design & consultation. Baking/cooking was something I often did with my Grandmother Edna Mae who we affectionately called Ma Dear. She inspired my business name and passion for the culinary arts. We’ve been blessed with an amazing client base who constantly challenges and supports us in all of our endeavors. Running Blaque Iris has given me the opportunity to pour back into the community I come from by donating resources to deserving youth, mentoring, and coaching other entrepreneurs in and out of the culinary space. I hope to continue building my business to expand my reach back to my community and continuing to always be a student. I’m a firm believer that you should learn something new each day. I love that I spend my days doing what I love and look forward to many more years of making lives a little sweeter.
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
My good friend and MUA extraordinaire Cynthia Servin task me with making the cake for her wedding. At this time I was only making cake pops after being inspired by a book I found while shopping by the incredible Bakerella. I had no clue how to make cakes at this time and shuttered to think about executing a cake, not to mention a wedding cake; however, because she believed in my abilities I began educating myself and practicing cake making and design. I watched You Tube videos, tried out recipes and invested in learning from giants in the cake/treat making business. I had a whole year to prepare and when the day came I was a nervous wreck. Thankfully the couple loved the cake and I now had the confidence I needed to step into cake making/decorating. Now that I look back on the cake, it was a disaster, lol. I’m so grateful though that my friend entrusted and believed in me enough to allow me to take part in her special day. She helped me get where I am today. Thank you, Cyn.
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
My business has been successful primarily due to word of mouth. The service you provide to your clients is extremely important. We pride ourselves on delivering a wonderful product and easing the creative process for our clients. Party planning as a whole can be very stressful so being able to take that burden off of our clients and execute their vision brings me so much joy.
