Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Meshach O’Brien. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Meshach, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Did you always know you wanted to pursue a creative or artistic career? When did you first know?
My initial inclination towards a creative and artistic path crystallized when I was casted as a lead in a church play when I was around the age of 10. The electrifying sensation of being on stage, coupled with the fulfillment derived from positive feedback, left an indelible mark on me. The second “first” was when I was cast in a McDonald’s commercial back in 2015 years after I no longer was acting in plays for my church. Although I didn’t fully commit to the professional path until around 2019, stepping onto a professional set for the first time ignited a spark within me. This moment became a guiding force, propelling me toward the decision to pursue a career in the creative realm on a full-time basis in the near future.

Meshach, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
My name is Meshach O’Brien, currently engaged in the multifaceted roles of Actor, Producer, Writer, and Director. My initiation into the industry transpired as an actor in 2019. The industry’s hiatus during the pandemic in 2020 prompted me to diversify my interests within the field, leading me to delve into writing. Initially undertaken as a means of maintaining creativity during the pandemic, my foray into writing evolved. In early 2023, I made the decision to produce and direct my inaugural short film, a project for which I also served as the writer. My contributions to a production vary depending on the specific role I assume, yet I assert that my involvement consistently introduces a layer of cinematic serendipity. At this point in my career I’d say producing my first ever short film is what I would say is what i’m most proud of.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
In my journey, the mantra “Never stay stagnant” embodies a poignant illustration of my resilience. During the early stages of my acting career, I faced the challenge of navigating the industry without the support of peers or a network. Lacking resources and knowledge on where to begin, I spent countless hours researching ways to progress in my career. Through perseverance and a commitment to not remain stagnant, I explored various casting sites and delved into instructional YouTube videos that explained key elements of the industry.
The absence of clear answers could have easily led me to abandon my career aspirations. However, the persistent mindset of “never stay stagnant” kept me going, driving me to find solutions and overcome obstacles. This journey also imparted a valuable lesson – the importance of asking the right questions. I realized that, in many instances, finding the right question is just as, if not more, crucial than discovering the answer.
As a result of not allowing myself to stay stagnant, I transitioned into writing, which further led me to explore roles in producing and directing. This transformative process underscores my resilience and determination to continually evolve in the face of challenges.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
As a producer and writer, I find the most rewarding aspect of my role is the ability to create opportunities for fellow creatives and artists. Drawing from my own experiences as an actor, I understand the challenges of securing chances and finding avenues to advance one’s career. Being in a position to offer these opportunities to others is immensely gratifying for me.
