We recently connected with Meshach Berry and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Meshach, thanks for joining us today. How did you learn to do what you do? Knowing what you know now, what could you have done to speed up your learning process? What skills do you think were most essential? What obstacles stood in the way of learning more?
When I began shooting content for YouTube, I didn’t have my own equipment. I’d rely on my friend’s gear, by trying to schedule shoots that worked with his, well, schedule.
I went down this route for several months, and with each completed project, I realized that this way of working wasn’t very effective.
So I decided to learn everything that I needed in order to create videos my way.
I purchased a camera (Sony A6300) and learned to operate it. I purchased lights and figured out simple lighting techniques. I subscribed to Adobe Premiere Pro and learned to edit videos.
I now shoot when I want and how I want. The process is infinitely better and saves me so much time.
So I say all of this to hopefully inspire any potential content creators to get out there and learn the tricks-to-the-trade from now. You’ll thank yourself in the long run.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Well first and foremost, my name is Meshach Berry and I’m a menswear blogger and YouTuber from Miami, Florida. I run the YouTube channel “Piece Of The Puzzle” and the website www.pieceofthepuzzlesc.com.
I specialize in menswear content that can range from full-on streetwear style guides to picking out accessories that are suitable for dapper attire. I also moonlight as a one-on-one style consultant—offering advice to anyone who may seek to explore the different realms of fashion and personal style.
By surfing the web, I was introduced to so many different forms of fashion and style. I would watch YouTube videos on how to put certain outfits together and I would discover pieces of clothing that I didn’t know existed.
After a while, I would take such pride in my style, that it honestly changed the way I felt about myself, in a way that nothing else could. When I would dress up, I would feel like “The Man.” My outfit became my suit of armor in a sense.
This feeling became so immense, that I had to guide others through the different avenues of fashion, and how to explore their own personal style. I wanted others to experience this feeling, thus creating the reason why I chose this field.
What can society do to ensure an environment that’s helpful to artists and creatives?
This one is easy and simple. Give them a try. The first step is always the hardest (although in this case, it really shouldn’t be lol). Just give them a try.
Established entities provide a sense of comfort, but the pay-off that you’ll receive from a hidden gem is infinitely bigger. I really do mean that.
Not only will they provide you with something truly valuable, but you’ll be helping someone who needs the support way more than any big-time business.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I truly wish that I knew the importance of lighting. As a visual content creator, your lighting is the second most important factor, behind your camera.
My footage would suffer greatly because I didn’t have enough lighting. And for the longest, I couldn’t figure out why my work would come out so low-res.
But then a friend gave me a valuable tip, to invest in proper lighting, and that became an absolute game changer for me.
