Risking taking is a huge part of most people’s story but too often society overlooks those risks and only focuses on where you are today. Can you talk to us about a risk you’ve taken – it could be a big risk or a small one – but walk us through the backstory.

Once upon a time, in the midst of a global pandemic, a brave and determined woman named Meryska found herself at a crossroads in life. For six long years, I had dedicated my time and energy to a major health insurance company, only to be unexpectedly let go. As a newly single mother of two, I faced the daunting challenge of providing for my family with no financial support other than my own and occasional help from my loved ones.

But I was not one to be easily defeated. I had always possessed a talent for styling hair and maintaining locs, which had been my cherished side hobby for family and friends. With no other immediate options in sight, I decided to take a leap of faith and turn my passion into a business.

Starting with humble beginnings, I began offering her services at just $25, traveling from one client to another all around Texas. Despite the exhaustion and long nights, I remained steadfast and unwavering in my commitment. I knew that success would come if I stayed true to my calling and believed in myself.

In the face of uncertainty, I turned to social media as my platform for self-promotion. I showcased my work, shared my journey, and connected with potential clients who resonated with my story. But it wasn’t just the external efforts that fueled my drive. I embarked on a spiritual journey, seeking strength and guidance from within. I knew that my children were my biggest motivation, and their support pushed me to persevere.

As time passed, my unwavering faith began to pay off. I started attracting like-minded individuals who became my soul tribe, a group of good-hearted people who genuinely cared about me and my mission to make a positive impact in my community. Together, we formed a tight-knit support system that propelled me forward.

Through it all, I never stopped believing in myself and my abilities. Even when others doubted me, I took myself seriously and embraced the attitude that anything is possible. I fearlessly pursued my ideas, implementing new business moves and strategies with confidence.

As my business grew, I realized that my true passion lay in the cultivation of natural hair and locs. Each twist and lock became a work of art, instilling a sense of joy and pride among my clients. My dedication and talent earned me a reputation as a trusted loctician, and soon my calendar overflowed with appointments.

Looking back on my journey, Ive felt blessed and grateful. I knew that I had been guided to this path for a reason. The challenges I faced and the hurdles I overcame had molded me into a strong and resilient woman. My business not only provided for my family but also allowed me to positively impact the lives of those in my community.

My story serves as a testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and self-belief. I proved that with passion, determination, and a little leap of faith, one can turn their dreams into reality. And in doing so, I discovered that the best ideas are often born from the belief that anything is possible.

I’m Meryska Taylor, a proud mother of two who embarked on an exciting journey just months before the pandemic struck. Having a deep-rooted passion for hair care, particularly natural oils and remedies, I decided to follow my dreams and relocated to Texas. Little did I know that this leap of faith would lead me to an incredible adventure.

With my extensive background in hair care and a burning desire to share my knowledge, I began networking and offering my services to the people of the Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) area at nearly no cost. As I connected with individuals, I noticed a specific need for quality products and maintenance for locs. Inspired by this, I decided to market my beloved oil blend specifically designed for locs, and that’s when everything took off.

Driven by my newfound success, I established Meryska’s Loc Maintenance LLC, a mobile loc maintenance service catering to DFW and surrounding cities. My wide range of services includes consultations and starter locs, as well as loc repair and reconstruction. Additionally, I proudly offer my exclusive brand of loc maintenance products, carefully crafted for skin, hair, and overall loc health.

My approach is rooted in a commitment to providing holistic and traditional methods for creating and maintaining locs. With over a decade of experience in loc maintenance, I possess the expertise and knowledge needed to ensure the highest quality of service. It’s not just about physical care; I also believe in empowering my clients with self-care techniques and cultivating a strong relationship with their locs.

Every step of this incredible journey has been guided by my genuine passion for helping others and promoting natural beauty. I’m excited to continue this path of making a positive impact and sharing my expertise with the world.

What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?

In my experience, the best strategy for growing my clientele has been through word of mouth. I strongly believe in being genuine and upholding integrity in all aspects of my work and the information I provide. I have a deep conviction that when you align yourself with the right path and remain authentic, the right people will naturally be drawn to you, leading to success.

As I embraced my true self and became more relaxed and confident in my abilities, I noticed that my appointments became more enjoyable and rewarding. My clients would often share their positive experiences with like-minded individuals, which in turn brought new clients my way.

However, it’s not just about acquiring new clients; it’s equally important to maintain strong relationships with existing ones. Following up with clients and showing genuine care and interest in their well-being fosters trust and loyalty. Additionally, by being personable and maintaining a high standard of quality in my work, I have found that it’s a guaranteed recipe for success.

Overall, I firmly believe that being true to yourself, providing exceptional service, and cultivating genuine connections with clients are the key ingredients for growing a thriving clientele.

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?

Unlearning the mindset of scarcity and relearning to live in abundance has been a transformative journey for me. Before moving to Texas, I found myself trapped in a toxic situation in Missouri, constantly feeling unhappy and stuck in a mindset of “there’s not enough.” I was afraid to take risks and merely existed rather than truly living.

However, I realized that there is a whole world of resources and opportunities out there waiting for me. I had to be willing to open myself up to these possibilities and relentlessly pursue what I truly desired. It was a mindset shift that required courage and determination.

One pivotal moment in my journey was when I picked up the book “You Are A Badass” by Jen Sincero. Reading that book was a game-changer for me. It challenged my limiting beliefs and encouraged me to stop thinking, “I probably can’t do that,” and start asking, “Why the hell not?!”

This newfound perspective allowed me to break free from the chains of scarcity thinking and embrace a mindset of abundance. I realized that there is an abundance of opportunities, resources, and experiences waiting for me if I’m willing to step outside my comfort zone and pursue them with unwavering determination.

Now, I approach life with a sense of adventure and a willingness to take chances. I understand that a successful life is not about playing it safe and staying in my comfort zone but rather about embracing risks and embracing the richness of life’s experiences.

Unlearning the scarcity mindset and relearning to live in abundance has opened up a world of possibilities for me. It has empowered me to chase after what I want, fearlessly and relentlessly, and to fully embrace the limitless potential that life has to offer.
