Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Mert Gurpinar . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Mert , looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. When did you first know you wanted to pursue a creative/artistic path professionally?
I realized I wanted to pursue a creative and artistic path when I got my first tattoo 10 years ago. Sitting in that tattoo artist’s chair, choosing the design, and watching the artist at work fascinated me. It felt like art coming to life on my skin and inspired me to explore different forms of creativity, like painting and drawing over the years. That tattoo marked the beginning of my artistic journey, and I’ve been passionate about it ever since.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I worked as an FX trader in one of Turkey’s largest banks while pursuing painting as a hobby in 2014. I created several artworks that caught the attention of well-known influencers in Turkey. Some of these pieces were featured in Marie Claire Maison in April 2021.
As my passion for art grew, I aspired to use the most unique canvas in the world – human skin. To fulfill this dream, I made a bold decision to resign from my 9 to 5 job in Turkey and relocated to New York. There, I had the opportunity to learn from some of the world’s most talented artists.
Since 2020, I’ve been living in the city, where I transform people’s ideas into tattoo designs that stand out from the mainstream. My love for artistic expression extends to various mediums, including digital art, but I find the most joy in designing using Geometric Abstraction and Contemporary styles.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
They appreciate my work as collectibles and choose to display it proudly on their skin, turning themselves into collectors of art on the precious canvas of their bodies to share with the world.
Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
My mindset underwent a transformation thanks to Rick Rubin’s book ‘The Creative Act: A Way of Being.
