We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Merissa Benedict. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Merissa below.
Merissa, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. So let’s jump to your mission – what’s the backstory behind how you developed the mission that drives your brand?
I developed an interest in photography at a young age because I grew up seeing my uncles travel photographs. From the beginning photography was more than just a hobby. It was personal. His photographs inspired me to start taking my own on my little point and shoot camera. When I got to high school I took every photography class my school had to offer, sometimes more than once.
Capturing the people and places around me became my passion.
My best friend was always willing to be my subject. From creating fun fashion shows to fun portraits at the park, she was down for anything I wanted to try. Over the years I took so many photos of her, my family, and of course, my pets. While I dabble in landscapes and other subjects, capturing the people and things that meant the most to me has become my true passion.
My best friend passed away in 2017. Those photos became priceless. They were used at her service as well as printed in her families house. When I lost my grandpa a few years later it was similar. Almost every photo my family has of him, I took. My cat Jazee was one of my biggest inspirations. I lost her a few months ago and her photos mean everything to me.
My cousin has young children and capturing their childhood is one of my favorite things.
The people I love are the backbone of my entire mission and my purpose as a photographer. They are my inspiration. I want to capture memories and moments that would otherwise be lost. The idea that because of something I did my family or another has a priceless photo of their loved one is everything.
I find that I enjoy capturing the everyday moments with people I love most of all. I hope to continue to grow and provide these meaningful memories for others.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I am a documentary style photographer living in the beautiful Pacific Northwest. I have two kittens and a dog. Apart from photography I enjoy reading, taking walks, and spending time with loved ones. Especially my kittens.
My photography journey began with my uncle, his influence sparked my interest in photography. My work is inspired by the people closest to me, as well as the natural beauty around me. I think what sets me apart is the ability to see potential in everyday situations.
A proud moment in my early career was having a photo featured in the Seattle times while still in high school. I also was part of a creative showcase a few years back.
A milestone for me was photographing my first wedding as the lead shooter, with no prior wedding experience. That was a rewarding challenge.

For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect of being a photographer is the ability to capture and preserve moments.
One of my favorite parts is when someone sees their photos for the first time. That reaction brings me so much joy.

Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
I wish I had realized sooner how beneficial learning from other creatives online could be. There are so many willing to share what they know.
I have found a lot of great information on YouTube. I find the behind the scenes and editing tutorials to be very helpful.
Another valuable resource is books. My uncle gave me the wedding storyteller books by Roberto Valenzuela before shooting my first wedding. We spent months going through them together and it made me less overwhelmed and more prepared.
