We recently connected with Meredith McCann and have shared our conversation below.
Meredith, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today How did you come up with the idea for your business?
As a mother of two little girls, a maternal health advocate and a survivor of severe Preeclampsia and HELLP syndrome, I was ready to leave my career in education behind and move on in a creative way. I knew I wanted to work in birthwork and also photograph. It wasn’t until I saw my best friend’s birth images from the birth of her son where it clicked- I wanted to document every aspect of motherhood and birth.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I take photos and video of birthing mothers, as well as maternity, newborn and family sessions. My families stay with me and I love watching them grow and change over the years. Being based in central TX means that I get to do a little bit of traveling up the 35 corridor and create my own schedule. I also offer a client closet of dresses and clothes for babies, since it can be so difficult to style family members for shoots. I’m a believer in printing the images that you invest in, so part of the experience with me is the ability to offer my clients a la carte luxury prints, wall art, gifts and albums. I’m also a certified doula which has helped me be a supporting member of my client’s birth team.
How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
Certainly with COVID, it was difficult to get off the ground first as a birth photographer. Being able to also provide my clients with portrait work for their family, maternity and newborn sessions has been such a joy and a way for my business to stay operational and thriving.
We often hear about learning lessons – but just as important is unlearning lessons. Have you ever had to unlearn a lesson?
I think it’s important to unlearn any past thinking or self-criticism in order to avoid imposter syndrome. It’s so easy as a creative to compare your work to another and get lost in the comparison. Just stick to your style, become an expert of your camera and your niche and just go for it.
