We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Meredith Johnson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Meredith, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
The Women’s Haven name was derived because we want to provide a safe space, place and products for women. One of the meanings of “haven” is refuge and shelter. The name is intended to make a woman confident that the products and service we provide will make them feel and be better. With the name to we have room to grow and expand, while keeping the same logo and premise. Women’s Haven a company women can trust to provide safe, quality products and services.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a multi-talented civil engineer, project manager, and entrepreneur. With a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and membership in the prestigious Chi Epsilon Honor Society, I have worked relentlessly to establish myself as a leader in my field.
I have worked on some of the most high-profile projects in the Bahamas, including the construction of the new Lynden Pindling International Airport and the BahaMar project. I have also successfully managed numerous projects, including the South Andros Water Distribution Project and the Malcolm Park Improvement project. I have notable skills in project management have earned the designation of a Project Management Professional.
As a Civil Structural QA Engineer for the US Embassy New Campus Construction Project, I demonstrated my ability to manage complex and sensitive projects with attention to detail and a commitment to quality.
In addition to my engineering experience, I am certified in OSHA and can operate a mini excavator and forklift. I am also an apprentice tailor and dressmaker, where I can express my creative talents. I was also heavily involved as Toastmaster and as a classically trained pianist, which reflects my passion for communication and the arts.
As the co-founder of Women’s Haven, I was able to bring my diverse background together. I use my experience in engineering and project management to the development of Women’s Haven. This level of expertise ensures that the company operates with a focus on quality, safety, and sustainability. I consistently work to empower and educate women about the importance of using safe and natural products for their personal care needs.
Women’s Haven is my space that I want to share with every woman. I am a testimony that the products work and can improve your life. I am proud and beam with pride every time I hear another woman shares with me how the product impact and improve their lives. I love the sanitary napkins and the oil, and the consensus among women the same. I love sharing and talking about Women’s Haven.
We’d love to hear about how you met your business partner.
I met my business partner in university. She was the girlfriend of own my childhood and best friend’s. She later became his wife and I even participated in the proposal, helped set up the scene.
She is meticulous, driven, caring, and assertive, like me. We got along really well, and it was rare to find especially when the tendency is for women to compete. As the time grows, she is more like a sister than a business partner. She has my back in every facet and I likewise have hers. We are in this together. We have learned to play to each other strengths and build from and on them.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
The journey has not been easy, from the many no’s from trying to apply for grants to help grow the business or the sometimes slow periods with incoming orders. But I will say my most trying time was 2021, I was eight months pregnant when my father died, and I was not by his side or even in The Bahamas. So of course, I went into early labor two days later and gave birth to my sunshine.
I grieved silently because I didn’t want to seem ungrateful for a safe delivery and healthy baby. I endured and still do thoughts of guilt for not being there with my father. I was still fulfilling wholesale orders with the help of my family and best friend, because customers really do not care what you’re going through and periods do not stop.
Everyday I try to keep going and not think of it too much, for my son, my family, and my business. I will be going and keep thriving and will continue to make my fauther proud.
