We were lucky to catch up with Meredith Huck recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Meredith thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. So, let’s start with trends – what are some of the largest or more impactful trends you are seeing in the industry?
We are seeing an influx in requests from our clients for separating spaces (gone are the days of an open floor plan), adding texture where possible and getting creative with tile. That can mean anything from changing the texture every few times (from a matte tile to a glossy tile), doing a thicker grout or simply how the tile is laid.
With WFH so prevelant nowadays clients are seeking separation from their home life and their work life, even when it is under the same roof.
Texture is a great way to add depth to a space with different fabrics or finishes.
Meredith, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
With a background in software sales, I took a leap of faith in 2021 to bring our boutique Interior Design firm, House of Huck, full-time. We specialize in renovations and new builds with full-service furnishing designs rounding out our core business. One of our favorite ways to support our clients is to give them a fresh idea to an otherwise run down space– maybe walls need to be knocked down, kitchens need to be reworked and builtins need to have more intricate architecture. Our motto is livable luxury, designing beyond what the eye can see. We take great pride in being able to transform a space through our creative partners and outside-the-box ideas.
How did you build your audience on social media?
In our industry, we are inside the private homes of our clients. In their bathrooms, their laundry rooms, their linen closets. It’s absolutely imperative that they feel comfortable with us, and trust House of Huck to execute on their intended vision. Getting in front of the camera on social media has been key to growing our audience and earning their trust even before we step foot in the home. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve met a client for the first time and they say “I feel like I already am friends with you!”. That is the ultimate compliment. Because at the end of the day it is all about the relationship. If you don’t like your Designer, if you can’t trust your Designer, if you don’t think your Designer has your absolute best interest in mind … then it’s a bad fit. No matter how beautiful their homes are and no matter how large their brand is to you.
Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
There are a few podcasts that have been instrumental to the success of House of Huck, and we have been fortunate enough to have since been featured in all of them. A Well Designed Business (LuAnn Nigara), Wingnut Social (Darla Powell) and Design Business Survival Guide (Rick Campos) all have podcasts that were able to help me as I took the leap of faith in 2021 to leave corporate behind and start House of Huck. Some of their guests include incredible designers like Meg Molten, Ellie Mroz, Lindye Galloway, Shea McGee and Lindsey Borchard. From these podcasts I learned process and procedures, best practices, tips and trips and how to be most profitable.
