We recently connected with Mercé De Ribera and have shared our conversation below.
Mercé, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. We’d love to hear about a project that you’ve worked on that’s meant a lot to you.
The project of my life is Bocar Teatre. It’s a theater company that I created when I was seventeen with my friends. Five years have passed since our first premiere and it’s a project that doesn’t lose its meaning. In it, I write the plays and direct them. I have had the opportunity to work with many fantastic actresses. It’s an all-female company. We love working together, giving voice to our things, telling our stories. It works very well and I hope to continue working with Bocar Teatre all my life.

Mercé, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I write and direct. I write scripts that I’m commissioned to write for different projects, from short films to music videos. I also write narrative and theater and direct different theatrical and musical projects.
I started doing this because I was an actress and I felt I needed more control over the projects I was involved in, so I created my own projects and found that it made me happier to be behind the cameras. Also, I’ve always written, from a very young age.

Any resources you can share with us that might be helpful to other creatives?
I wish I had known that everyone is just as confused and lost as I al. That people succeed and fail, it’s all in spurts. That we only see the success of others and that makes us feel that we have less, but everyone has their own journey and the important thing is not to stop working and not to lose the enthusiasm for what we do. And always do what we want to do, not what we think the industry demands.

Is there a particular goal or mission driving your creative journey?
One of my biggest dreams would be to premiere one of my plays at the Spanish National Dramatic Center. Now I’m about to fulfill another dream I’ve always had: to publish a book.
