We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Meranis Moss a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Meranis, appreciate you joining us today. I’m sure there have been days where the challenges of being an artist or creative force you to think about what it would be like to just have a regular job. When’s the last time you felt that way? Did you have any insights from the experience?
I would take struggling as a creative over having a secure regular job 100% of the time. The fulfillment I get from living in line with my purpose could never be bought out. I know that the game I’m playing is a long one and it’s full of ups and downs, so the challenges I face from being an artist kind of comes with the territory. It’s a hustle for sure.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
So I am a man of many hats. I always find it hard to answer the question of “what I do” but I’lll try to sum it up. Everything I do revolves around music. I am a producer, songwriter, vocalist, and multi instrumentalist. I play in a band, as well as my solo artistry. I also write and produce for other artists, and make music for TV and Film. I work in a variety of genres depending on what the situation calls for, but my main artistry is more hip-hop, r&b focused. I love being able to work on so many diverse projects because I never get bored. There is always something new.
My favorite thing about working in the music industry is the collaborations. Whether that’s with other musicians or film directors, or anyone else, it’s always a blast getting to work with people all playing different roles to get to a final product we are all happy with. Sometimes the process takes longer than we anticipate, but it’s always worth it in the end when we get to hear the final mix of the songs.
Is there mission driving your creative journey?
Absolutely. I call it my “WHY.” It’s why I wake up in the morning and work so hard at what I do. I truly believe that music is the most effective tool for communication. It’s universal beyond language or learning style. Music can demonstrate emotion just based on the notes and how they are played. Music connects us. Everyone can understand rhythm. Everyone can clap or dance along. It’s engrained in us. It’s our heartbeat.
I believe I can serve as a messenger of wisdom with the music that comes through me. I believe I can cultivate unforgettable experiences for people that stick with them for the rest of their lives. I believe I can create an environment that supersedes division and helps people realize that despite our differences we can all come together and live in harmony. That’s the root of it. Harmony.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
So I was part of a duo for the past few years. We produced, wrote and performed together. We spent A LOT of time working on our craft, building our skillset, building our brand, and talking about the future. We also spent a lot of time talking about life and philosophy and all kinds of crazy outlooks we had on the world. We really became best friends. We even lived together for a bit.
Anyway, some opportunities came up that called for him to move to another country across the world. Unfortunately, that pretty much put an end to our business partnership. So I had to start out on my own. I had to learn how to run recording sessions, how to do all the paperwork and organization, handle all the business decisions, and develop an entirely new musical identity all on my own. At first it was pretty overwhelming, but as time went on I got better and better, and eventually it became an opportunity for me to grow into myself. I realized I was far more capable than I had given myself credit for. And now I am beyond grateful that I was pushed out of my comfort zone so I could explore and expand into someone I never thought I could be.
