Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Meowtin Boynton. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Meowtin, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
Everyone at Sinwave comes from a performer/musician/artist background. Because of this, we all have a singular goal to make Sinwave a place where we would love to perform and/or showcase our art. We’re committed to maintaining an easy going, playful, and creative atmosphere and providing state of the art sound and lighting for all shows, big or small. We provide artists with a green room and the opportunity to sell their merchandise without taking any cuts for ourselves.
Speaking for myself, I love music. I was a bit of a late bloomer musically, but once I found the music I loved, I LOVED it to death. When I was young, I loved to dance around my room and sing into a little pretend microphone and do air guitar and pretend I was a rockstar on stage. I would wait for hours watching MTV to see the videos I actually cared about and eventually, even if I didn’t want to admit it, love the songs I hated to sit through. I would sit by the radio and wait for my favorite songs to come on so I could record them to a cassette tape and have them to listen to on the bus or on my walks to see my friends. When I was 20 I joined my first band not knowing shit about fuck. I’ve been in 7 bands since, one being an internationally touring act going on for two decades.
I love all kinds of art. I’m fascinated by the beauty in the world. The paintings, the nature, the humans… creativity in general. I love comedy. I love being able to use laughter to heal. I love community. I would probably still be on the worst downward spiral of my life if it weren’t for community. Friends who lift each other up. Friends who listen to understand rather than to reply. Strangers who listen and understand. Meeting some random person I’ve never met before and finding a weird connection or a spark. Being open and vulnerable and real. Sharing what makes us happy, sharing music and art, sharing our darker times, and feeling togetherness in a time where it seems like people are separating and isolating the most.
In starting Sinwave, one of the things I’m most excited about is to bring the love of all these things to one place. Music, art, creativity, community, light-hearted fun, dance… I could go on and on! I want it to be a silly, free spirited (within reason), fun, stress-free environment full of great music, unique acts, and loads of laughs and good times. It’s a project I can work on that will liven up my passions and the passions of those around me while also being my source of income. I am constantly surrounded by the most talented, amazing people and the idea of giving a platform to these creatives gives me purpose.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
I first got into the music industry by making websites for my friends’ bands. One day, one of the bands asked me to join them as keyboardist. I didn’t know anything about being a musician, but they thought I would pick it up quickly since I was an electronics and computer guy. They were right and I’ve been doing keyboards now for close to 25 years. I’ve picked up other instruments like bass and ukulele as well, with keyboards remaining my main instrument. This band would go on to tour domestically and internationally, playing the smallest of dive bars to being featured in arenas and amphitheater festivals. I gained a lot of experience being in the music industry, making contacts, learning the ins and outs of the business, and meeting tons of extraordinary people.
My decision to start a venue out in Las Vegas came from a lot of factors. Over the past 5 or 6 years I became extremely focused on mental health. Something that always spoke to me during this journey was the idea of being of service to others. I knew I was meant to do more than write website code or keep grinding as a musician. I have been fortunate to be able to find supportive people in my life who helped me grow, helped me heal, and helped stoke the fires of creativity to be where I am at today. Now, it’s time for me to pay that kindness forward. I had no idea what that was going to look like until a few years ago when my best friend and I moved to Las Vegas. Once I was out of my routine and cycles, I was able to focus on my future.
After a while, starting a venue seemed like the obvious choice given my background. Once the decision was made, it seemed like things started falling into place. I met Blake Attebury, my business partner who has an eerily similar vision and background while also sharing the same ideals and values that I find important. Once he was on board with his extensive business background, I finally had the confidence to move forward.
We want to see all different kinds of acts at Sinwave. We all have varied interests and passions. Between bands, DJs, and performers, we will be accepting all genres across the board. Sinwave will feature karaoke, dance nights, vending events, toy swaps, movie nights, games, and all kinds of other forms of entertainment. We strive to be different and we love when things get weird.
Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I almost didn’t make it out of 2016.
I dealt with a lot of trauma as a child. My father was shot and killed when I was too young to remember him and my mom had to do a lot of things just to make sure we survived that a child shouldn’t be exposed to. These things lead to a rough life up until I was a teenager. Even though things got better, none of these things were ever dealt with or processed properly and I had no idea how to deal with or process some of the other tragedies that would occur in my life. Eventually, this lead to substance abuse problems, relationship nightmares, and a downward spiral that nearly cost me my life.
It all came to a head in 2016, trying to break from emotional blackmail, trying to get clean, dealing with 2 major deaths in my family, being the victim of sexual assault, and trying to get off of psych medicine. It felt like even having to face a single one of these things would be more than I could handle, let alone all of them at once. I sat on the edge of a cliff, trying to decide whether it’s worth going on or not. Obviously, I made the decision to go on and that I would no longer be a victim. I made healing my 100% top priority, no matter how uncomfortable or scary some of the methods ended up being.
I used to be a passenger in life. Taking whatever the universe gave me and just dealing with it. Working for others and letting others make decisions for me. After doing what was necessary to move on from my past, I now have the strength and fearlessness to be the driver. Climbing out of the rock bottom of a hole was the hardest and most rewarding thing that’s ever happened to me. I definitely would not have been able to start a business without going through what was necessary.
How’d you meet your business partner?
The people I am working with have been so crucial to making this dream come true.
My closest friend, Myke and I have been playing music together since 1999. We’ve traveled the world together in our band, Short Fuse and have shared all the same experiences in the music industry. He’s not an official partner or employee, but I felt compelled to mention him since he has been a confidant through this whole process. He moved to Las Vegas first and while visiting him I met my beloved. Had that not happened, I may not have moved here myself.
Scara Darling and I have been together for a little over two years now. We were both looking to do something different with our lives that didn’t involve working for others. We both have desires to do what we love and over time decided that a venue would be the way to go. Through Scara I met Blake Attebury who as it turned out had all the same desires and visions we do. He owns Sinister Salon on Main Street and while Scara was getting her hair done, our venue idea was brought up in conversation. Once he and I sat down and really started talking about it, it became obvious that we would be perfect partners, complimenting each other in our similarities while supporting each other through the different things we all bring to the table.
