We recently connected with Meola Jackson and have shared our conversation below.
Meola, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
I enrolled in the BFA program at Medgar Evers in 2020 where the latter give me a chance to envision how to create my own art. However, before that, I always wanted to do something special.
Meola, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
To begin, I got my name from a family related, Sheila Boucard, who admired the American goalkeeper, Tony Meola. She had a crush on her and decided I should be named “Meola”. Funny some might say but it is the truth.
I want my audience to know that I’m an artist before anything. I love singing and when I do I get emotional. Partly part of my songs reflect on that too. I love sharing my stories with everyone so that they can find their own voice.
My upcoming short film, L’ombre, which will premiere on June 6, 2023, on Youtube tells the story of a lost soul in the mirror. With constant dreams and thoughts, Meola has to battle the demons.
In your view, what can society to do to best support artists, creatives and a thriving creative ecosystem?
That’s a very hard question to answer but I think the best way we can do is to provide a platform for our audience to communicate. For example, Tiktok is a giant platform where one person can go viral in one day or two, and boom he/she/they becomes/become famous. That’s great. The sad part is that sometimes we go viral for the wrong content. It might not be planned. I just wish the creator of TikTok to choose wisely. More importantly, I think if you see someone thrives to become somebody, just let them be. support them, share their contents with family and friends. Help them with the basis necessary without stealing their artistry.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
I think the most rewarding aspect of being an artist is when you are being true to yourself without no one else opinions or point of views on your crafts. For instance, my up coming short film, “L’ombre”, that I produce shows a side of me that no one has not yet seen. I did not care what Little Johnny will say. I simply did it. The most important part is that I compose the song and I had some brilliant friends, Yannik Taylor who was the creative director and Steven Brown who directed and shot it. We did not care.
