We were lucky to catch up with Mengyuan “Mia” Qin recently and have shared our conversation below.

Mengyuan “Mia”, appreciate you joining us today. One of the toughest things about progressing in your creative career is that there are almost always unexpected problems that come up – problems that you often can’t read about in advance, can’t prepare for, etc. Have you had such and experience and if so, can you tell us the story of one of those unexpected problems you’ve encountered?

As a stage manager, encountering unexpected issues is an inevitable part of the job. The key to effectively handling these challenges lies in proactive planning, maintaining a calm demeanor, and fostering open communication. First and foremost, meticulous preparation ensures that you have contingencies in place for various scenarios, allowing for swift action when unforeseen circumstances arise. Keeping a composed and level-headed attitude is essential, as panicking can escalate the situation and hinder problem-solving efforts. Additionally, clear and timely communication with the production team, crew members, and performers is crucial for swiftly addressing the issue and implementing solutions collaboratively. By adhering to these principles, I can navigate unexpected challenges with efficiency and professionalism, ensuring the smooth execution of the production.
