We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mengge Bao. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mengge below.
Alright, Mengge thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What’s been the most meaningful project you’ve worked on?
It is difficult to choose just one project, as each one has been a steppingstone leading to where I am today. However, if I had to highlight the projects that have significantly impacted both my professional and personal development, I would say “The Simpsons” during my time at Bleeding Fingers and the Chinese love-drama feature film “All These Years”.
Throughout my career I have had the opportunity to work alongside some of the leading individuals within our industry, one particular example of this was during my tenure at the Emmy-winning music studio, Bleeding Fingers. During my time as a composer at the organization, I had the privilege of working alongside many esteemed and talented composers to develop the music and score behind award-winning TV and film productions, such as the 37-time Emmy winning show “The Simpsons.” Bleeding Fingers Music is a hub of creativity. Working in such a fast-paced and creative environment taught me how to thrive under pressure and manage multiple tasks simultaneously. The people at Bleeding Fingers Music were not only incredibly skilled but also super innovative, inspiring me to think outside the box and always aim for improvement. This experience shaped my approach to both work and life, giving me a strong work ethic and a deep passion for creativity.
In March 2023, I took on the role of Lead Orchestrator for the Chinese film “All These Years” (这么多年), a heartfelt story of enduring love and personal growth. Tasked with transforming the compositions of Yiren Wang and Xiaoyi Ying into a full orchestral score, I worked tirelessly to develop a score that not only supported the intended vision behind the project, but also enhanced it. To meet the tight deadline, I planned each step of the orchestration process, focusing on efficiency without compromising quality. I worked closely with the composers, Yiren Wang and Xiaoyi Ying, to quickly understand and translate their vision into detailed orchestral arrangements. Leveraging technology, I utilized digital mock-ups and virtual instruments to expedite the orchestration process while ensuring that the emotional depth and narrative nuances of the music were preserved. Time was against us. There were 50 minutes of music that needed to be written and orchestrated in less than a month. We succeeded, and it was one heck of a ride. The project was an immense success, amassing over 300 million Yuan at the Chinese box office alone. I am proud to have contributed in such a cental manner to such an important and successful project.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Certainly! I’m a composer, arranger, and producer with a background in engineering. My journey into the music industry has been a unique one. Before pursuing formal training at Berklee College of Music, I was mostly self-taught in music, drawing inspiration from a wide range of influences. This background has given me a distinctive approach to composing that blends technical precision with artistic creativity.
I specialize in creating music for various media, including film, television, and other visual projects along with songwriting and producing. My goal is to enhance the storytelling and emotional impact of these projects through music, creating memorable and immersive experiences for audiences. I provide a range of services tailored to the specific needs of each project, from composing original scores to arranging and orchestrating existing music.
I craft music that complements their projects and helps to elevate them to new levels of quality and impact. Whether it’s creating an energetic and dynamic score for an action-packed scene or crafting a melodic and emotional theme for a poignant moment, I strive to deliver music that enhances the overall narrative and resonates with viewers. Instead of composing, I prefer to say that I tell a story thought music.
What sets me apart from others in my field is my diverse background and unique perspective. Coming from a background in engineering, I bring a meticulous attention to detail and a problem-solving mindset to my music, ensuring that every note serves a purpose. At the same time, my self-taught roots give me a sense of creativity and experimentation that allows me to push boundaries and explore new musical territory.
I’m most proud of my work on the Chinese films “All These Years” and “Johny Keep Walking!”, both of which have amassed wide acclaim and box office success. Despite the challenges that comes with composing and arranging such large and important projects, I was able to effectively collaborate with the music department on both projects to create a beautiful and evocative score that perfectly complemented the film’s narrative.
Overall, I want people to know that I’m dedicated to creating music that not only meets their needs but exceeds their expectations. Whether you’re looking for a composer for your next film, TV show, or other visual project, I’m here to collaborate with you to create something truly special. And most of all, to have a wonderful time together as fellow creators.

How about pivoting – can you share the story of a time you’ve had to pivot?
In Wuhan, I pursued a degree in Automation at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, but as time passed, I became acutely aware of a growing dissatisfaction with my chosen path. While my classmates delved into circuits and systems, I found my true passion lay elsewhere—in music, where I could craft melodies that resonated deeply with me and people around.
Feeling increasingly unfulfilled and facing what could only be described as an early-life crisis, I made a bold decision to pivot towards a career in music. Despite the uncertainty that lay ahead, I was determined to follow my heart.
My journey led me to Berklee College of Music, where I immersed myself in honing my musical skills and further exploring my passion. This pivotal moment marked not just a career change, but a profound transformation of my inner self. It was a testament to the power of listening to one’s true calling and having the courage to pursue it.
In recognition of the unique perspective and dedication that I brought to my work as a musician, I was honored to receive the Writing and Composition Scholarship and Contemporary Writing and Production Major Achievement Award during my time at Berklee.
Today, as a composer, arranger, and musician, I have continued on this successful path and I am grateful for that moment of awareness that led me to where I am now—a creator who believes in the beauty of following one’s dreams.

How can we best help foster a strong, supportive environment for artists and creatives?
I think this society needs to promote true diversity and inclusion by providing opportunities and platforms for artists from all over the world to showcase their work despite their nationalities and religions. This can include initiatives to support underrepresented groups and ensure their voices are heard. Additionally, raising awareness and appreciation for the arts is crucial. This can be achieved through education and outreach programs that highlight the value of art in society. Moreover, supporting the mental health and well-being of artists is crucial. This can provide access to mental health resources, create a supportive community, and address the challenges artists face, such as instability and creative blocks. Together, these efforts can help create a more inclusive, aware, and supportive environment for artists and creatives.
