We were lucky to catch up with Memphis Kee recently and have shared our conversation below.
Memphis, appreciate you joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
The most meaningful project I have worked on is the upcoming record of my band entitled, “Wimberley”. The songs on the record were written over the last few years but a few didn’t completely come alive until me and the band sat up late at night while staying at the studio and rearranged and reimagined them. There is a song about my and my wife’s beautiful daughter and how we became a family. That one really means a lot to all of us as she made our family whole through the adoption process. There’s a song about my wife and I staying together and fighting for each other through the difficult times of that marriages sometimes have. It is a very personal record and I am extremely proud to release it to the world October 28th.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers
I am an Austin, TX based Singer/songwriter named Memphis Kee. I lead a 5 piece country rock band that is starting to make a little noise on the Texas music circuit. We call the music we play, Shred Dirt, a nod to the Red Dirt music scene that started in Oklahoma. We lean a little harder on the rock edge of that genre and sometimes sound like a straight ahead rock band.
I am also a private investigator that owns my own PI Firm, Precision Surveillance and Investigations. I have been in business on that side of things since 2017 after 8 years of being a police detective. We are a full service investigation company that handles criminal defense, background checks, and infidelity investigations.
For you, what’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative?
It is extremely rewarding to have a fan tell you that a song you wrote meant so much to them. I had a young man come up to me last year after a show and said that a song I had written had helped him make a decision to not take his own life. It was a song about me leaving my home.in Memphis in my early twenties to move to Texas. He was going through some heavy home sickness and said that he would listen to the song when he was down and it helped him to make it through. I still remember his name. It meant a lot to me.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Something every working musician will experience is the show that doesn’t have a good turnout. You’re looking out at an audience that is much smaller than you expected. Someone told me a long time ago that you.nevwr know who is watching and to play every show like you’re playing for your life. Especially nowadays with livestreaming being so prevalent, even having one audience member could mean hundred or thousands will see that performance.
