We were lucky to catch up with Meme Green recently and have shared our conversation below.
Meme, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Before we talk about all of your success, let’s start with a story of failure. Can you open up about a time when you’ve failed?
Life lessons are the biggest teachers. I remember I was set to release my second self-published book. It felt like the release of a second album and I was afraid of the sophomore jinx. However, I wanted to ride the wave of success from my first book. My lesson was failing to hire a professional editor. The decision to self-edit was a mistake. Surgeons know how to perform surgery. Should they ever perform surgery on themselves? Absolutely not!
The truth was the book was not ready but I released anyway. I wasn’t prepared for the comparison to my first book.
Sometimes we rush to do things out of season or take on too many roles instead of outsourcing help.
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
Meme is a nickname that was given to me by my family. As a little girl, I was very shy and timid. Being shy was a way to mask my pain. When I started writing books, I started giving “Little Meme” a voice again. Hence, the development of “Meme Green” the author.
My books stand as a symbolism of a voice for the voiceless. My books are designed to be a beacon of Hope, Faith, and Courage.
What else should we know about how you took your side hustle and scaled it up into what it is today?
My career started off as a Marriage & Family Therapist. As a tool for healing, I utilized journaling as a means to express my thoughts. My first journaling experience detailed the trauma and triumphs of my life. One day a friend discovered my journal and suggested I release my memoir.
I had never envisioned myself as a writer or a published author. One book has now led to nine books. I discovered a love for writing so I decided to start my own publishing company to help women release their story.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
My reputation is built on transparency. I share more than my “yes” moments. I’m very honest about times when I feel discouraged or a door closes. I believe there is something within me that makes people gravitate towards me. I’m a safe space.
