We were lucky to catch up with Melynda Bly recently and have shared our conversation below.
Melynda, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Learning the craft is often a unique journey from every creative – we’d love to hear about your journey and if knowing what you know now, you would have done anything differently to speed up the learning process.
My Mama always told me when I was a kid I would sing all the time. She teased me because when I would try to go higher in the notes, I would just sing louder instead. 🤣
I always wanted piano lessons. I begged for them, but we had a large household. I have four sisters. We didn’t have much. I started acting as young as fifth grade, and continued musical theater through high school. I once got the lead role as Kim in Bye Bye Birdie. I also sang in girls ensemble, and the jazz choir for 4 years. I continue to sing at weddings and funerals and anywhere I could, even karaoke. It wasn’t until 4 years ago I learned that co-writing, and retreats wrre available to me. I attended my first retreat in May of 2021. Since then I’ve been hooked, and have attended around fifteen different retreats and Worship conferences. To this day, I regret not learning how to play an instrument as a child. It is essential to a songwriter to be able to play well. Things would
go a lot more smoothly today If I had to go back, that is probably the one thing I would change, as well as voice lessons. I have been very proactive in my studies the last four years. Making up for lost time, I have a songwriting mastery course, a pro logic x production course, and have taught myself piano and guitar so far. I also want to learn drums and violin. My advice would be to continue learning, believe in yourself, and never compare yourself to where others are at. You were made to be right where you are for such a time as this, including your age.

Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I have been a Worship leader for about 11 years. I love my church like family. I have been singing since I could talk and love to dance. I am a kind, easy going person. The one people say eases their stress. I really love all people and animals so much. My heart sometimes breaks for the hardships people bear. I am an empath. I have so many songs written I can’t wait to record once the funding is available. That has been my biggest setback in this business; finances. I travel to Nashville often, and even have dreams of moving there if it’s in God’s plan for my life. I am proactive in helping save the children, and am interested in mission work, and adoption. I love to write. I do almost daily. I hear words and they become lyrics. I’m constantly getting my phone notes out to jot down new ideas. I’m hosting my first songwriting retreat in May of 2025, and cannot wait to see what God is doing in my life.

What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
100 percent Jesus Christ. He is the reason I sing. I am all about saving the one, not the 99. Kind of cliché, but, it’s my motto. I am currently writing songs for the church as well as songs for TV and film; aka sync music. I am working on doing better with growing this year. I have so much going on in my head at all times. Songwriting has really became an outlet for me, a journal if you will. I am a very passionate person. It drives me to help others. My heart aches for the world. I hope I can be used by God to make a difference.

Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
Oh boy. For me this one is probably hard for some to understand. I have really dealt with some hardships in my life. The domino effect after so many years created depression for so long. You would maybe never know because I am really happy, and goofy, and, fun, and smile at everyone, and just try to make the world a better place. It has led me to be limited at times and caused a lack of discipline in growth for studies in music and voice. My confidence is growing, and God has called me to do what I do. This year is my year to shine for God. I can’t wait to see God do what he does.
