We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Melyana Sie a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Melyana, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s start with the story of your mission. What should we know?
I am currently baking high quality cakes in hopes to achieve a good textured cake and a cake that tastes delicious to our consumers that is also moist and soft. My current mission statement is selling our cakes onto other restaurants, markets, and Indonesian groceries so many people can know about us. The key to our tasty cakes is by baking them in the highest quality possible, no preservatives added. We bake cakes for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries, graduations, baby showers and many more. We strive to make our cakes not only pleasing to the eye, but enjoyable to eat by others. This is a very meaningful mission to us because we have heard many stories from customers about ordering cakes that look very nice, but the taste is not good. It is usually dry, missing flavor, or crumbly. Our hope is to fulfill the criteria for a beautiful looking cake, but also tasty one. We are also looking forward to introducing other people to Indonesian styled cakes.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
Before I started baking, I’ve always wanted to have a business of my own. I would pray to Lord Jesus everyday, asking Him to help get me start a business that involved me and Jesus. The following week after, I received an email about taking cake making courses and I took on the opportunity to learn. After baking my first cake, I showed my friend my design and had her taste the cake, and she thought the cake tasted amazing. The cake was soft, moist, and the design was very appealing to look at, so she ordered a cake from me. From there on my business has expanded into many horizons and has lead to where I am standing now as a licensed home baker. Problems that we solve for clients is the balance between cake designs and the taste of the cake. For example, we bake cakes for weddings because we want to show other people that we can bake cakes that look good, yet taste very well too. What makes us different from others is that we make Indonesian style cakes, using Indonesian ingredients as well as techniques and methods. We want our future clients to know that we make our cakes the highest quality possible and also the freshest with no preservatives added. Our cakes are accepted by a diverse community of people such as Chinese and Mexican, not only Indonesians.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
I think that by introducing our cakes as Indonesian styled, high quality cakes and giving it the best effort we could ever put in the cakes has lead customers into wanting to try our product and open up their doors to something new.
We’d love to hear a story of resilience from your journey.
A lot of people would tell me that my cakes are expensive and would not buy it due to the cost, but because of the quality and taste our cakes have, our customers have learned to accept our prices and understood what it takes to maintain a high quality cake. High quality cakes are not cheap, so I have to push myself to keep putting my best effort into satisfying our customers, no matter what they think about our price.
