Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Melody Rosa . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Melody , thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Owning a business has always been a dream of mine. Despite this, I never really thought about what type of business I would own. I always had the support of my girlfriend at the time, who is now my wife. At the time, I was a new vegetarian doing research and making sure my products were plant-based. As a result of my research, I found out that Dove soap is made from pig fat. When she found out, she was disgusted, and I told her we could make our natural alternatives. As a result of her gift set for soap makers during the holidays, I became interested in craft making. As part of my quest to perfect my craft, I spent countless nights on YouTube, even taking as many complimentary webinars as I could. That wasn’t until I got a direct message from my Instagram account that someone told me I should sign up for Etsy and sell my goods there. I was conflicted at first as everything was all new to me but I’m like let’s turn this business owner dream into reality. After the excitement came the hard part of thinking of an apothecary name that no one has on the market in reality. It took me about a couple of months. From December through February right before the Pandemic began it took me that long to not only figure out the business name and be happy with it. I thought of it like this the business is a baby, but a baby that not only needs to be recognized it has to be catchy and what no one has thought of before. Of course, I started with my name and played around with it on online business general names but it wasn’t clicking. Then I gave adjectives for what I would like to sum up the business such as magical but it was all falling flat to me. Until now my mother-in-law suggested making it bilingual but make sure it still means something to me. My business is made of soaps, candles, room sprays, and body sprays with a spiritual twist. The witch came into play, and with my Puerto Rican background which means Bruja. But I wanted something to not only represent the business products, it had to represent me. Water has a huge meaning for me. Not only are most of my items used for bath rituals, but my zodiac is Scorpio, and one of the deities I vow to is Yemaya a water goddess. That is how WaterBruja was born.

Any advice for growing your clientele? What’s been most effective for you?
Most humbly, getting out there. The journey began with just being on Etsy and showcasing my products on Instagram. As my approach to growing my clientele was building trust, I didn’t want to pay for ads. Honestly, I paid for Instagram ads once, but their extensive rule list prevented me from paying for more ads, which I consider a blessing in disguise since I didn’t want to rely only on one platform to grow my audience. As a result, I decided to expand beyond social media platforms, such as Facebook and Tik Tok, and enter the world of wholesale with sites such as Faire and Creoate. Not only did I build an online presence I did want to grow a local presence and test my products to have an in-shopping experience so I’ve been doing pop-up markets and it’s been growing ever since. From expanding and truly listening to my customers such as throwing giveaways, discounts, and freebies. In addition to asking questions on what they would like to see as a new product what scent they will prefer or simply checking in on loyal clients, it all helps build a genuine connection with clientele.

How did you build your audience on social media?
Building an audience on social media is keeping up with the trends and making it relatable to your business. While posting consistently make sure you are clear with your brand presence. Take clear images, use a photo box if helps with a product setup, and LED lighting helps the picture to focus on the product. If there is no photo box I also use an app called Photoroom which allows me to add backgrounds or simply clear everything in the background and create a white background. Hashtags are still a huge play in social media and I will recommend creating a hashtag with your business name. Videos are also getting way more traction than photos so come up with creative ways to showcase products to your customers whether is “Watch me how I make this money drawing candle” or explaining the purpose of the product it helps build traction and keep your clients in continuing to check out your site.
