We were lucky to catch up with Melody Riggins recently and have shared our conversation below.
Melody, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Let’s kick things off with your mission – what is it and what’s the story behind why it’s your mission?
Black households have the lowest homeownership rate nationally. My mission is to bridge the gaps. I myself am a first generational homeowner, as homeownership was not taught in my household. My goal is to educate my community on the process and importance of wealth building through homeownership.
Melody, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I first found real estate while working as a member service representative at a credit union. There is where I learned about credit and savings. It was 2018, I was 24 years old. I Began my personal Development , repairing my own credit and intentionally trying to save using saving products I learned about at the credit union. I began to want more for myself, I joined a church group and began my research on “how to become wealthy” Real estate ! It was the number one wealth builder. I signed up for real estate school, passed the exam, and didn’t sell my first house until 10 months. It was a lot more difficult than expected. Lol I sold another house 2 months later. After conversing with God, I quit! I decided to go all in. I knew I wasn’t the most knowledgeable but I I believed I could find success in this field. I was going to build my business by educating the masses on building their credit and saving their money. I realized the need and knew That was my lane. Besides I didn’t know much more about real estate at the time. I built my business from an authentic place. I began to post heavily on social Media. I gave credit tips , savings tips, and I filmed my transition from being an employee to a business owner. I didn’t realize I was inspiring the masses by simply being transparent, open, and honest. I began to quickly grow my clientele by meeting my clients where they were. Some were prepared to buy while others needed a little work to get prepared. I shared my clients success stories while they raved about their experiences working with me. I 100% went into my career with the mindset of serving and that 100% worked for me and still does Today. After 1 year of quitting my job I became a top agent in sales and top earner at my brokerage. I found my passion and haven’t looked back,
Can you share a story from your journey that illustrates your resilience?
When I initially quit my job I joined a real estate team. There is where I learned alot about being an effective realtor. After 10 months, my team lead expressed that she’d be replacing me which meant I’d be out on my own. I didn’t feel ready. I remember privately shedding a tear. Lol I wanted to shut down but I knew that there were ppl out there who believed in me and others who needed me and my services. I again was very transparent about my transition.I applied myself, dived into my work, And doubled my business that year as a solo agent.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
Transparency through social media has been my most effective strategy for growing my clientele. By the time I meet my clients in person , they already feel like they know me. I share my highs and lows. I share success stories, real estate tips, fashion tips, mom life and more. I show up as my authentic self and my clients love that. I establish real relationships with my clients even after the transaction. Many of my clients are a reflection of me. They say you attract who you are .
