We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Melody Minasian a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Melody thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. We’d love to hear about when you first realized that you wanted to pursue a creative path professionally.
My passion for baking started from both my grandma and my mom. Growing up, I’d see them baking different cakes and pastries for loved ones and saw how much enjoyment came from just a single slice of cake. As I became a teenager, I took an interest in cake pops and started experimenting with different designs and exclusively making them for my cousins children’s birthday parties. As I grew my skill, my then boyfriend, now husband, encouraged me to try my hand at having my own business, as he saw the popularity of my desserts. I was nervous as I’d only created for family but decided to take the leap. Overtime, I grew my craft through trial and error and started offering more than just cake pops. I now create desserts from cakes, sugar cookies, cake pops, and other custom treats. I was able to grow a clientele that has supported me for many years.

Melody , before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
I offer custom desserts from cakes, cupcakes, cake pops, sugar cookies, and more. Typically, I’ll ask for inspiration pictures One thing about me is I’m always willing to learn and try my hand at new techniques for my clients. I’m not afraid to admit if I don’t know something and take the extra step to learn.
I got into this industry after years of making custom cake pops and small desserts for my family and friends, I decided to turn in into a business after seeing all the positive feedback I’d get as well as the increase in orders I was getting as I started posting my work on social media.
I love to add an extra level of sweetness to people’s events through the treats I make. Seeing the happiness a slice of cake brings someone or the huge smile when they see their vision I was able to bring to life is what makes it all worth it.

Let’s talk about resilience next – do you have a story you can share with us?
I’ve had many ups and downs in my career that have lead me to where I am and shown me how resilient I can be. I’ve had a few times where the orders I’ve made didn’t meet my standards or I wasn’t completely satisfied with the end result without enough time to fix my mistakes. I remember a time when I had just started my business and as I was walking out the door to fulfill a delivery, the treats fell out of my hand and shattered across the floor. I took about 5 minutes to cry it out and vent, as this had never happened before. I took a deep breathe, texted my client that the order was running a bit late, and rushed to make a new set of cake pops. Thankfully, with the skills I’ve learned, I was able to make these pretty quickly and get them delivered for the client. I was pretty disappointed at first with myself for letting the cake pops slip out of my hand but later, acknowledged that mistakes happen and all we can do is learn from them. I’ve gotten much better at my time management skills and now, when someone asks for a specific dessert, I’m able to accurately guess how long it’ll take me to make those treats.

What’s the most rewarding aspect of being a creative in your experience?
The most rewarding aspect of being a dessert artist is bringing to life a vision that my clients have. With both my clients vision and my mind, we’re able to create cakes and desserts that I didn’t think I would ever be creating. I’m extremely grateful to have such wonderful clients that allow me to express my creative side while making a lasting impact through the desserts I make for each special event.
