We recently connected with Melody Fox and have shared our conversation below.
Melody, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today So, naming is such a challenge. How did you come up with the name of your brand?
Naming a business is difficult. Am I going to like this years down the road? Does it fit my overall vision of what I do? So many questions.
Originally I had my business name as ‘Foxy’, which didn’t quite work out, but did become the brand of my knitted hats.
During the naming process I became the dog mom of a beautiful red Labrador retriever. I always wanted a ‘big dumb’ puppy. Big paws, big head, just big.
The company name is after my big dumb, lovable puppy: August – the Big Red Dog. (and studios is to say there are multiple venues of creativity happening under one umbrella).
Awesome – so before we get into the rest of our questions, can you briefly introduce yourself to our readers.
How I got into the sign industry.
I went into college to become an art major – they don’t make money, but they are fun, right?
A year into school I became pregnant and had to move back in with my parents – insert marital problems and abuse here as my reasons for having to move back home.
While back home, I needed to figure out how to support my soon to be son on my own. I remembered in high school touring the local technical college in town. They had a sign specific degree for signage and design or neon lettering.
I took the sign design route and got my degree in 2 years and got into the industry right away after college. Allowing me to support myself and my son.
What do you think helped you build your reputation within your market?
The Stillwater Chamber of Commerce and their Women’s Business Bridge program were HUGE in giving me confidence and relationships that have helped grow my business.
What’s been the most effective strategy for growing your clientele?
I strongly stand behind networking in the right circles, doing what you say you will, and consistency.
