We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Melody Cohn a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Melody, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to have you retell us the story behind how you came up with the idea for your business, I think our audience would really enjoy hearing the backstory.
When I left corporate advertising and marketing, I needed a new creative outlet. I had always wanted to create clean, natural products that promoted self-care and relaxation for busy women so I bought some initial ingredients and literally started the company from my kitchen table in 2018. I made products for myself, shared them with my friends and started to selling them locally and online. The company steadily grew and I think the key was keeping in authentic and creating a connecting with my audience. Trying to convey the message that I am hear for them and I understand what they are going through as opposed to trying to just sell them a product was key to my early success and is still a cornerstone of our company today.

Melody, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
ROAM Homegrown is a candle and gift company that focuses on clean, serene products that help busy women relax. We love crafting candles and products that nourish the body and soul and sending out thoughtful gifts that bring people together and create authentic connections.

Can you open up about how you funded your business?
ROAM Homegrown is entirely self-funded. Early on, I had the choice to pull out capital or reinvest. I chose to reinvest in myself and focus on the long-game. It isn’t always the fun decision, it can be scary and difficult, but it’s key to growth. It was important to me to maintain creative control to keep our brand messaging and product creation as authentic as possible. Growing a business doesn’t happen overnight. There is definitely a struggle that you don’t see as an outsider, but it’s extremely rewarding.

Have any books or other resources had a big impact on you?
I love BrandStory. It’s a great exercise in defining who you are as a brand, what your messaging is and how you can add value to the customer. You brand isn’t about you, it’s about them. That is something we always come back to when we talk about our company and where we are headed.
