We caught up with the brilliant and insightful MellowMan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
MellowMan, looking forward to hearing all of your stories today. Going back to the beginning – how did you come up with the idea in the first place?
During the initial wave of the pandemic here in the U.S. many of us were in shock at how our society suddenly shutdown within days and with many deaths people begin to become more isolated and depressed. During this time I was one of those as well but with my Christian faith God gave me the idea to do something opposite of what was happening…show LIFE. That’s exactly what got me started filming various walk tours was to show life and I attempt to capture that no matter what I film.
It started out slowly but people began to resonate with the content and my YouTube channel had a sudden growth within months.
I had no idea it would be a success but just followed what I felt like was God’s voice leading me to do it.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I actually got into the creative field years back in the early 2000’s working for local media organizations. I used my know how there to come up with a concept to begin filming reality segments with a more authentic long form process.
I’m most proud of staying true to myself when producing content and not simply creating content solely to please the masses.
How did you put together the initial capital you needed to start your business?
When the pandemic hit I was between jobs so I had to figure out a simple way to get my work started using small amount of funding. Ended up using part of my rollover 401k funds to buy a few basic pieces of equipment. To this day I use most of the same equipment with a few small additions.
Are there any resources you wish you knew about earlier in your creative journey?
SEO. When putting your work out there in the digital world it’s crucial to understand what makes people drawn to your content through titles and thumbnails. I don’t like creating click bait like some for views but do understand choosing catchy phrases and thumbnails helps a tremendous amount getting folks to actually watch and click on your content.
