Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Melissa Stenger. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Melissa , thanks for joining us today. Can you talk to us about a project that’s meant a lot to you?
Created and Wrote a Dark Comedy Pilot Titled: Bad Therapist.
the tv show is a dark comedy about a recovering alcoholic who is a Thearpist. The covers alot of topics on mental health in a lighter comedy aspect. I have many characters that audiences can connect to.
my team and I recently filmed a proof of concept back in January 2024, we are currently in post production and ready to pitch in the next 2 months.
Great, appreciate you sharing that with us. Before we ask you to share more of your insights, can you take a moment to introduce yourself and how you got to where you are today to our readers.
I moved to LA from hawaii 2010 to attend AMDA (American Musical and Dramatic School) I studied Musical Theatre, after the 2 year program I was more interested in Acting for TV and Film and decided to stay here.
Auditioning became hard, with many call backs and barely no bookings. So I decided to write and devlope a concept for TV show, which grew and evolved into Bad Therapist.
While writing and creating this show for 8 years, I was working as a PA on student films, making my network and connections and finding my place behind the scenes, which later sparked a passion to work in camera department.
I’ve made so many connections and did so many favors for people that by the time I was ready to film a proof of concept for Bad Therapist, I was able to cash in my favors and get the ball rolling on my tv show pilot.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
A couple years ago I had started a production company Be Free Films with 2 partners for my tv show, but they wanted different things then I did so decided to re brand and start a new company that represented me, and my vison of my TV show.
This new company is Stengray Productions, my new logo has a stingray and a filmstrip as the tail.
What do you think is the goal or mission that drives your creative journey?
The goal of mine is to have a network like HBO max or Hulu pick up my pilot, and to be able to get hired and work on my show as a actress or producer.
