We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Melissa Rodriguez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Melissa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today Being a business owner can be really hard sometimes. It’s rewarding, but most business owners we’ve spoken sometimes think about what it would have been like to have had a regular job instead. Have you ever wondered that yourself? Maybe you can talk to us about a time when you felt this way?
I can honestly say that I am very, very happy being a business owner. I have worked many “9 to 5’s” and never felt like they fit me or my lifestyle very well. I started working in the medical field in my early 20’s and quickly realized that as much as I loved helping people; what I really wanted was to be out in the world, traveling and taking photos. Being inside a dark office, staring at a computer is just not how I envision my life going for the next 20-30 years. I know a lot of people are comfortable working regular jobs, and all power to them! It’s just not what I want to do.
As always, we appreciate you sharing your insights and we’ve got a few more questions for you, but before we get to all of that can you take a minute to introduce yourself and give our readers some of your back background and context?
I am a portrait and wedding photographer based out of Los Angeles, California. I have been practicing photography for forever! I think I’ve had a camera in my hands since I was a little girl, and photography has always been a passion of mine. I honestly didn’t think about having a career in photography until I was in my mid-20’s and really wanted to become an editorial photographer. Since starting my career I have photographed everything from weddings to concerts. I have had the amazing opportunity to travel for work, and meet some pretty amazing people.
The thing about me is that I never want to stop learning. I always say that when I quit my regular job to become a full time photographer; it took me from working 9 to 5, to working 24/7. When I’m not photographing or editing photos, I am watching Youtube videos on bettering my craft, or looking through Pinterest to find inspiration for future photo sessions. I am also always trying to give my clients an amazing experience and try to make each session like it’s just a few friends getting together instead of just being a “transaction.” I love all of my clients, and everyone who has supported me on my journey!
What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
I have noticed that word of mouth seems to be the best source for new clients but I have also had very good luck with clients finding me on social media. Usually Instagram or Tiktok are where new clients find my work. That is, when I actually remember to post things. I am terrible at keeping up with social media and am always surprised when people find my work through there.
Can you tell us about a time you’ve had to pivot?
The biggest pivot in life was when I finally decided to go full time in my photography career. I had put in my notice with my job because I was going to start working for NASA JPL. I was a little worried at the time because I was already committed to a few photo gigs within the next couple of months and wasn’t sure if I would be able to do both. Then I got an email from the recruiter at JPL taking back my job offer because they had hired too many people. Suddenly I was left with no job and kind of “forced” to jump into photography full time. It turned out to be the best thing that could have happened, and now two years later I am still able to support myself with my creative career. I was afraid for years thinking I wouldn’t be able to live off my photography, and that whole situation was just the push that I needed. “What’s meant to be, will be.”
