We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Melissa Rodriguez a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Melissa, thanks for taking the time to share your stories with us today We’d love to go back in time and hear the story of how you came up with the name of your brand?
There is a band I started following about 18 years ago that changed my life. I was a teen going through a really tough time and this band took me on as part of their street/merch team. Not only did I love the music, but I felt like I belonged to something bigger and more meaningful. They have a song named “Something Beautiful.” I knew that when I started my photography brand that the name fit the feeling of my brand. It meant that I was finding something beautiful not only through my lens, but in the moments of everyday life. I get to bring those moments to life for people to keep forever. From the perfect candid laugh to the biggest milestones of their lives, it’s truly, something beautiful.
Melissa, love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
I photograph everything from couples and families to boudoir and weddings/special events. I specialize in building a great rapport with each client. By knowing my clients on an individual level, I am able to capture real personalities, real moments, and create meaningful keepsakes. This relationship building keeps customers coming back to capture all their milestones. I recently had a customer say “If it’s not Melissa, we don’t want it!” My clients become close family and friends and I wouldn’t trade that part of this business for anything. I also make sure to stay true to myself and my style throughout the whole process. I love to have fun, make people laugh, and have candid moments with clients instead of everything feeling posed and stiff. When everyone enjoys getting to relax and being themselves, the photos reflect all the best parts of the people they love.
Where do you think you get most of your clients from?
Word of mouth can be a great source for new clients. Word of mouth customers have been referred by people that have already had a positive experience with a creative. They’ve seen your work and know what to expect in an experience from friends or family. The best part is that word of mouth is just a testament to the impression you leave a client during their experience with you.
What do you find most rewarding about being a creative?
The most rewarding aspect is the feeling a customer has after I deliver their investment to them. The confidence a customer feels after a boudoir shoot or the way a newlywed couple gets to look back on their wedding day is such an incredible feeling. I was able to witness their special moment and turn it into art they treasure, an investment they’ll have forever. I had a client tell me recently after her boudoir shoot, “You were able to catch the confidence and sexiness that I feel on the inside.” Delivering confidence and beauty while doing something that I love is the ultimate reward.
