We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Melissa Pennington a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Melissa, thanks for joining us, excited to have you contributing your stories and insights. What do you think Corporate America gets wrong in your industry? Any stories or anecdotes that illustrate why this matters?
One of the key missteps Corporate America often makes in the realm of HR is failing to truly recognize and invest in people as their most valuable asset. While many companies talk about “people first” initiatives, in practice, they often prioritize short-term profits over long-term employee well-being and development. This disconnect can manifest in a variety of ways, such as inadequate support for career development, a lack of meaningful engagement with diversity and inclusion initiatives, and an over-reliance on rigid performance metrics that dehumanize employees.
From an HR perspective, it’s clear that people thrive when they feel empowered, supported, and valued. However, many corporate environments focus on transactional relationships with their employees—treating them as expendable resources rather than nurturing their growth. By overlooking the importance of a supportive culture and failing to invest in opportunities for leadership development, mentorship, and continuous learning, companies risk creating disengaged teams that underperform and face high turnover.
In addition, corporate America often relies on top-down decision-making structures that ignore the insights and creativity of their workforce. Empowering employees to contribute their ideas, take ownership of their work, and feel part of a larger mission can drive innovation and productivity. Yet, many organizations remain siloed, with leadership disconnected from the actual experiences of their employees.
Ultimately, corporate America’s failure to build environments where people can thrive as both professionals and individuals undermines long-term success. When HR departments truly prioritize the empowerment of employees, fostering a culture of support, respect, and inclusion, companies are better positioned to achieve sustainable growth.

Melissa, before we move on to more of these sorts of questions, can you take some time to bring our readers up to speed on you and what you do?
Hello! I’m Melissa Pennington, and I’m the founder of HR on Demand, where we provide tailored human resources solutions for small businesses and nonprofits.
I entered the HR world out of a passion for empowering people and organizations to reach their full potential. Early in my career, I saw how many businesses struggled with understanding the complexity of HR while also trying to create environments where employees could thrive. This gap inspired me to start HR on Demand, where we work closely with organizations to help them navigate the nuances of HR, from compliance and audits to leadership development and employee engagement.
What we provide:
At HR on Demand, we offer a range of services designed to help businesses streamline their HR processes while focusing on people as their most important asset. Our offerings include:
Internal and external HR audits, ensuring compliance and preparing businesses for success.
Leadership development programs to nurture future leaders within organizations.
Employee engagement strategies, including mid-year check-ins, surveys, and events.
AI implementation to streamline HR processes, including real-time coaching and training platforms.
The problems we solve:
We help small businesses and nonprofits tackle the complexities of HR so they can focus on their mission and growth. Whether it’s helping a business prepare for an external audit or crafting development plans for staff, we provide the expertise that allows businesses to operate smoothly, empowering both leadership and employees. Our approach helps create stronger, more cohesive teams and ensures businesses stay compliant with ever-evolving HR regulations.
What sets us apart:
What truly sets HR on Demand apart is our personalized approach. We don’t believe in cookie-cutter solutions. Instead, we work hand-in-hand with each client to understand their unique challenges and opportunities. Whether it’s conducting an HR audit for a boutique hotel or developing a comprehensive employee engagement strategy for a nonprofit, we meet businesses where they are and guide them through their HR journey. We’re also innovative in incorporating technology like AI to keep our clients ahead of the curve.
What I’m most proud of:
I’m most proud of the impact we’ve made on small businesses and nonprofits that may not have had the resources to hire full-time HR staff. By stepping in as their go-to HR experts, we’ve helped many organizations not only comply with regulations but also build strong, people-focused cultures. Watching those businesses grow, knowing we played a part in that success, is incredibly rewarding.
What I want clients and followers to know:
HR on Demand is all about creating HR solutions that are as dynamic as the businesses we serve. We’re passionate about helping our clients thrive by focusing on their most valuable resource—their people. Our goal is to make HR easy, accessible, and effective for every client, no matter their size. We believe that when businesses invest in their people, they unlock their full potential, and that’s where we come in: to make that journey smoother and more impactful.
If you’re a business looking to enhance your HR processes or ensure your team is set up for success, HR on Demand is here to help you every step of the way!

What’s a lesson you had to unlearn and what’s the backstory?
A lesson I had to unlearn is the scarcity mindset—that belief that if someone else is doing something similar to what I’m doing, it diminishes my own value or chances for success. For a long time, I felt like the market could only hold so much space for people offering the same services, and if someone else had already made a name for themselves, there was no room for me.
The backstory? When I started my business, I was constantly comparing myself to others. I’d see someone else offering HR solutions or consulting services, and doubt would creep in. I’d think, “Why would anyone choose me when there are already so many people doing this?” That doubt made me feel like I wasn’t worthy or capable of building a successful business.
But over time, I realized that this scarcity mindset was holding me back. I had to shift to an abundant mentality, recognizing that even if someone else is offering a similar service, my approach is unique. My story, my experiences, and the value I bring to the table are different, and that makes all the difference. There’s enough space for all of us to thrive.
Unlearning self-doubt and embracing abundance taught me that my uniqueness is my strength. The opportunities are out there, and the right clients, partners, and supporters will be drawn to me because of what I offer that no one else can. It’s not about competing—it’s about realizing there’s enough for everyone and knowing that I am more than worthy.

What’s worked well for you in terms of a source for new clients?
The best source of new clients for me has been a combination of referrals and social media presence. Referrals from satisfied clients have been incredibly powerful because they come with built-in trust. When someone who’s worked with me shares their positive experience, it creates a strong recommendation that new clients find valuable.
On the social media side, platforms like LinkedIn and TikTok have allowed me to reach a broader audience by sharing insights, tips, and success stories. My content not only showcases my expertise but also builds relationships with potential clients who resonate with my message and approach. This combination of word-of-mouth and strategic online engagement has been key in driving new business.
