We were lucky to catch up with Melissa Oleson recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, Melissa thanks for taking the time to share your stories and insights with us today. What did your parents do right and how has that impacted you in your life and career?
My parents taught me the importance of building relationships, supporting one another, and how to truly listen. These are all aspects of being part of a family, treating someone like you would like to be treated and that has translated into my career 100%. I always treat my clients exactly how I would expect my mother to be treated. People want to be heard, be listened to, and feel like they are getting the best care possible and that is so hard to find these days in healthcare. When you truly listen to the journey someone has been on you will pick up on all the details that are contributing to what is going on.
We would have family dinners together every Wednesday evening at my great grandmothers house from before I was born up until COVID happened. They have looked different over the years as they are now at my parents house and some family members have passed and new ones are here, but it’s always been for the same reason to come together as a family spending time with one another. We would all get together and truly listen to one another.
Melissa , love having you share your insights with us. Before we ask you more questions, maybe you can take a moment to introduce yourself to our readers who might have missed our earlier conversations?
Hi! I’m Melissa, a doctor of physical therapy and an Integrative Nutritional Health Coach as well as a registered yoga teacher. I founded MSUNN Yoga & Wellness, a mobile and virtual concierge physical therapy and wellness practice focused on helping people relieve pain, build strength, and gain mobility. I blend my background in yoga and physical therapy to help individuals feel better by taking a big picture look at what is going on.
Melissa became passionate about pelvic health when she found that it was often the “missing link” that enabled her clients to fully recover from niggling injuries. I kept hearing similar stories and that clients thought this was something they just had to deal with. I wanted people to know they did not have to deal with peeing their pants when they laugh, sneeze, or jump, didn’t have to worry about always running to the bathroom, and the pelvic pressure and heaviness feeling could go away!
I’m totally obsessed with anatomy, biomechanics, ergonomics, and all things wellness. Basically, I love problem solving to get you moving your best!
I grew up with an extremely active family; my great grandmother skied well into her 80s, and I strongly believe that you should be able to enjoy the sports and activities you love without pain or limitations. Don’t just deal, don’t give up what you love, and definitely don’t stop because you think you’re too old.
I started my business because I knew people deserved better! I wanted to be able to provide better care and truly listen and spend more time with people to help them achieve their goals. I was tired of having to see 3-4 patients at the same time knowing they would be getting better faster with more individualized care. That is when I started my own company.
I wanted to be able to have exercises with cuing for my clients to follow along with there exercises so my boyfriend and I started a YouTube channel to help with this. Oh boy did we learn so much about the online world and tech! I wanted to keep spreading the word that you do not have to just deal with pains, peeing your pants, or give up the activities that you loved. I then realized how many more people I could help this way so started developing online courses, group programs, and masterclasses to be able to reach more people.
Training and knowledge matter of course, but beyond that what do you think matters most in terms of succeeding in your field?
Listening! Listening to clients stories, their journey, where they had been brushed off or dismissed in the past. When you really listen you pick up on all the important things that might just be the missing link to helping them feel better.
If you could go back, would you choose the same profession, specialty, etc.?
I would 100% choose the same profession. The only thing I would have done differently is starting my business sooner to be able to help more people. I love the problem solving, the connection with people, helping people move & feel better, and take back control.
